40.5 rudder bouyancy?

I all,
I have refitted the rudder on my 40.5. It was a job inherited from the previous owner. New bearings had been turned and all fitted fine.

There is nothing to stop the rudder moving upwards other then the blade on the hull or touching removable deck. (Which ever is closer)

I never saw the old bearings so don't know if the lower had a taper to stop it traveling up. Is the rudder naturally buoyant????

Thanks
Matt

Hi, thanks for the reply.

What is there to stop the rudder lifting up and making contact with the hull? The rudder bearings both top and bottom are in line with no taper. The only thing can be the quadrant on the deck moulding and that's only screwed down??!

Thanks
Matt

On my 1997 there is a ring that is just above the top of the rudder that stops the rudder from hitting the hull. I will look to see if I have a picture.

That sounds like the idea. I took the boat on from someone else, the bearings were shot prior to him removing the old bearings etc. I suspect the ring is about an inch thick?

Thanks

same here have a big nylon ring, looks to be same as stuff as the bow anchor roller, has a grub screw locks it to the rudder shaft at the top of the blade
