How to organize a locker- 272LE

I struggle to figure out a way to organize the locker space in the cabin, starboard side, under the stove. It's a locker with a door opening outward, with a couple of cubic feet of storage. I throw lots of things in there, but there's no shelving or anything, just a mess.

Has anyone added shelves, dividing walls, anything to that space?

We put ss Martha Stewart coffee pot in there along with stacking pans/ etc. every once in a while I put a lg. bottle of Dewars in there so with it's big bottom it can sit level...it's also good for boxes of trash bags, zip-lock bags, etc...I used Rubbermade products and attached them via screws to the forward bulkhead in the space....What I want to know is what to do with the locker under the sink...we keep an electric bilge pump in there to pump out the ice box w/water to sink as the original failed early on in the boat's life... i.e. fynspray pump...the repair kits don't seem to repair...maybe it is me. Storage

So funny I saw this post. This weekend my wife cleaned and organized the boat and when she asked me why I haven't built shelves under the stove. I laughed! Now this post. I like the idea of mounting plastic bins. I even thought about small milk crates. Wood boxes would even be a choice. One thing a really hate is the insulation from the freezer box. That annoys the crap out of me. You think Oday would have covered that. Looking forward to seeing other peoples opinion.

Re: Storage

Sorry to sound dumb, but when you talk about the insulation from the freezer box, your referring to the now yellow styrofoam? I misspelled that...the foam keeps us from using the area under the sink for any useful purpose....we live with it under the stove....I tried to hang Rubbermaid organizers but they did not hold much and essentially reduced the available space...we just put coffee pot, stacking pans, trash bag rolls etc under there....at least there is a door that keeps my scotch bottle from falling out when the boat heels....Pat

Re: Storage

Yes Pat referring to that foam. Yes I do the same thing about storage. I have some storage bins that hold the same stuff. My freezer box is used for dry goods. I have a 12v/110 fridge freezer under my stairs where you have your engine. We frequent the Channel Islands so we need as much space as possible. Having the outboard model saves us much needed space for the dometic fridge. Life saver!

can anyone send pictures of what you have done? it would be interesting to see how it all fits.

also.....anyone with a preference on a stove to use? when I bought my boat it had a removable butane stove which I really do not like.......I was told the gas stove was best?

We've had our 272 since 1986 and have really used and loved the origo 4000....we've done everything on it from egg's benedict to salmon and crab cakes...even boiled 10 pounds of potatoes on Thanksgiving for a dinner on the boat with friends....It is very easy! Pat

Referring to the freezer box...yes, I just pile dry goods into it and haven't really found a way to organize it as it is so deep with little wiggle room. Keeps my whiskey safe though as things are packed around it. The more shelves you start putting in seems to me to limit how much whiskey you may be able to put in the cupboards at any one time. he... Maybe that's what my wife would want also though. I have always seen a lot of netting used, kinda like tieing stuff up. The netting can be adjusted (for bigger bottles of whiskey) and stowed when not using or you need the entire space for say, a pony keg, or something else of value. I just don't know where to get more netting.

What size outboard gets you to the Channel Islands? The Oday 272 I just bought has a 15hp outboard. It seems to be a little too much? And the boat lists to the starboard side a bit which I am guessing is because of the engine weight and batteries being on that side?

I sail out of Ventura and I use a Honda 8hp newer model and it pushes my 272 5-6 knots no problem at half throttle. On a bigger current more throttle. Never even considered higher horsepower. The 9.9 weighs the same but puts out more. The 15 would be overkill.

If you keep your 30 gal. water tank relatively full the list to starboard will likely disappear.
Problem for me is I need a new tank....mine has a leak right along the top and leaks when we heel to starboard...so I keep it half full....it is a hairline crack....have considered getting a bladder type tank as the boat is in a slip w/water available so it is easy to fill thereby making the bladder type adequate....has anyone switched to a bladder type and is there a preferred brand....that fits the port space? I installed a Plastimo 50 Liter bladder in my 272 this season. I connected it to a footpump installed in the galley cabinet below the basin. The bladder fits easily in the port settee storage space. My tank and hoses were 30 yrs old, and as we update this boat, we decided to use something smaller than the original tank.

We haven't had the chance to use it yet this season, as we have not stayed overnight on the boat yet this season. I don't know if we will get the chance.

I will let you know how it works if I do use it!

Thanks,

Andrew

Andrew, I forgot to get as-built dimensions of the helmsman's seat as well as the dimension to the center of the pedestal. I will
be out there tomorrow for sure and promise to get the dimension for you....I apologize....Patrick
