Happy Fathers Day

I'm a dad, myself and of course I'll give the old man a call and we'll talk about the U.S. Open, like we always do at this time of year. I wish I could be with him every day; he's an old salesman, who never lost his gift with people, a guy who can always be found after dinner at a restaurant, chatting up the kitchen crew. He's a great dad and a great guy.

And there's another dad, who has unfortunately passed away, my late father in law, who gave his lovely daughter the gift of sailing. Yesterday, in beautiful winds left by a clearing tropical storm, we shed the kids for six hours (thank you public library teen center!) and enjoyed one of the fastest and most thrilling sails we've ever experienced together. Inland lakes are most often plagued with fickle, swirling breezes, requiring constant trim or course corrections. But yesterday it was blowing a steady 10-12 knots northwesterly, a fluke that allowed us to broad reach for long periods up and down the reservoir, sailing at 7 knots, faster than we've ever had her going. At one point I asked my wife if she wanted the tiller- we usually share- and she said, "Nope, I'm just enjoying the ride, I love this."

So, thank you Bill, for the gift you give me every time we sail, a perfect sailing partner.

And Happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there, who are doing the same.
