Drought?
We're having a drought ... Our precipitation this year is on pace to be less than 40 inches for the year if this keeps up ... that almost never happens. We normally get about an inch of rain per week - perfect for keeping lawns and trees green without sprinkler systems.
What makes me cringe are the homeowners associations who insist on sprinklering the lawns even during the rain. Then they complain that they need a better drainage system so they can walk around in their yards without sinking into the muck.
No, they don't seem to know that they live in a desert. Isn't a desert a perpetual drought? Or is a drought a relative term?Our brethren in So. Cal. still haven't figured out there's a drought.

Technically, a desert is a region that receives less annual rainfall than its average annual rate of evaporation.
Here in the Sonoran, we get about 12 inches of rainfall/year on average, but at about 1/2 inch evaporation/day, we've a deficit of 14 feet.
And this is considered one of the wettest deserts on Earth!
We hose it down two or three times a week mainly to get the bird crap of the deck. We know it is time to really clean and add a protective wax cover when the crap stops sliding away easily. The sails get washed when it rains or when they are down for repairs. We do clean the cabin thoroughly, no food left aboard to attract critters, a dehumidifier keeps mildew away, the head is cleaned and the plastic bag used to collect the sanitary paper disposed off. The galley and fridge are given a good cleaning as well. This cleaning usually takes place the day after arrival as when we get there we just usually tie and close the boat op and move on to sundowners.
