Then Young down the Eastern cost of the lake maybe to Pentwater then back across to Milwaukee. I have 19 days . Does anybody have any advice, Experiance or recommendations for this area???

I have no experience (yet) of sailing that area, however we plan to sail the Grand Traverse Bay and Manitou Islands this July. As members of the Great Lakes Sailing Club we are able to tap into a wealth of member information and recommendations. I highly recommend that you join if you plan on sailing the Great Lakes very often. The discounts you receive from marinas and businesses always more than pays for the annual dues.

In the Grand Traverse Bay area we plan to base ourselves at Sutton's Bay Marina and day-sail to Traverse City, Bowers Harbor, Elk Rapids, Old Mission, Northport, and Leeland. All of those small towns are highly recommended for dining, shopping, and exploring if you like that kind of thing. The area is well know for their cherry and blueberry crops as well as their local wineries and craft beers. They are big on festivals so check their websites if you would like to catch one.

The Manitou Islands are on our agenda for their excellent hiking and exploring. You can anchor off each of them then dinghy in for a day of exploring. They had been previously settled then abandoned so there is a lot of history to explore. If you plan to anchor overnight it is recommended that you anchor in the NE bay of South Manitou Island. More information on their websites.

As you sail from the Manitou Islands towards the Michigan shoreline and perhaps Leeland Marina you will be headed towards the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. It won the title of 'Good Morning America's Most Beautiful Place in America'. Its a long story but audience members voting online selected it above all others in America. Can't wait to see it!

I have way too much to share here. Let me know if you would like more information. Have fun!

Don't know where you could go wrong ...

I've stayed next to Sleeping Bear Dunes (Little Traverse Lake), near Pentwater in a house on top of the dunes, and been to summer camp as a kid on Hamlin Lake (Ludington) very close to the dunes. Granted, this was many years ago (almost a different lifetime for me when I was a midwesterner) ... I can vouch that the eastern shore of Lake Michigan along that whole stretch is heaven on earth. You'll find soft white sand and warm(relatively), crystal clear waters, particularly near Pentwater. Funny you should mention it because I've been talking to Sue about renting a house on Beaver Island later in September, maybe. The east (Michigan) shoreline is a different world from the west shoreline for sure ... it has all the advantages. I wouldn't miss Pentwater, it is a nice, nice place and it looks like you can make safe harbor there, for sure.

Have fun, I'm envious no matter what your choices.

please share your adventures. We have only day sailed out of Muskegon, with a 2day trip south as far as Saugatuck. But we certainly can vouch for the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Enjoy!

Apex I sailed to Muskegon 2 years ago. We loved it!! One of our favorite things about Muskegon was how nice and helpful the people were. I would like to share my adventures as much as possible. Maybe I'll keep a log on this fourm.

Text us when you are in the area if you would like to get together sometime. (309.620.4461) We also monitor Ch 16 when sailing. Our boat name is Heaven Bound, our friends boat name is Grab A Heine.

The marina discounts depend on each individual marina and can vary from a few dollars per night to 20%. Many restaurants and chandleries offer discounts as well. We save the cost of the membership at a restaurant at our home marina alone! They give us 10% off the entire bill. You should know, however, that none of the Michigan state owned marinas offer discounts, at least none we have found.

Enjoy your trip!
