Losing the season ...

Unbelievable after the deep snows of winter ... we don't have enough water for the marina to float our boat. We're stuck on land! NJ DEP regulates the flow of water from the lake with guidance from a Water Level Management Plan which was prepared by a host of DEP personnel in 2011. Ever since then, water level has been a fiasco. At the heart of this fiasco is the annual water level drawdown for winter, where they lower the level by 26 inches to minimize dock maintenance for lakefront homeowners. They also seem to have increased the water release rate above historical norms.

Now, every year, water level has been an on-going battle. Why they can't just leave the water at the spillway level and let rainfall dictate the water flow over the spillway is beyond any rational person's comprehension. It's worked fine for well over a hundred years, ever since the level of the lake was artificially raised about 12' to create the Morris Canal back in the early 1800's.

We've had little rain since the ice finally melted in April. They have to wait for the ice to melt before allowing the lake level to rise. The window of time is simply way too short, but in the infinite wisdom of these dolts, they just don't care how many people are negatively affected. These guidelines benefit nobody and there are no ecological reasons for this idiocy.

With the water down over a foot, our boat is landlocked. The upside is that Sue is on a mission to get our house ready for sale. She wants to downsize and I have no argument. With a generous reduction in expenses, taxes, and maintenance, we are counting on a healthy increase in boating time. We'll finally move our boat to a new home where the horizons will be limitless. A larger boat may also be in the cards (for Sue's comfort, of course ;)) The time away from sailing is focused on making this happen ... but I may just have to move our boat this summer if the water level doesn't rise rapidly.

Scotty,

That really sucks! Anytime you want a ride you're always welcome with us on the inland seas.

Sorry to hear that.

Don't you have representative government in New Jersey, or is your governor too busy still trying to mess up the George Washington Bridge? :)

See what happens when the government is involved. All you need to do is find the right person to pay off and the water will rise

Stu, I think you're on to something. There are 4 towns bordering the lake ... one of the mayors must have done something to piss him off! Maybe I'll bring that up at the next LH Commission meeting.

No, we're just like most states ... bureaucrats are in charge and they don't give a .... who they affect with their idiotic policies.

Good start.

When it comes to matters like this, the government looks at three potential ramifications in this order:

1) Economic
2) Environmental
9) Recreational

If you want action you will have to tie it to a good reason number 1 or 2. No one is going to care about some 'yachty' who might has to look for another place to play on his boat!

Oh God Stu, I laughed so hard when I read that my sides hurt.

Remember we had elected officials involved in a ring selling illegal body parts !

We're moving out of NJ in the next 18 months (I've lived here 50 years). Scott's example is the norm here, not the exception. God help us all if Gov Bridgegate gets elected Pres.

Not bad ... but it must be modified thusly ...

1) Economic (money in the pockets of politicians)
2) Environmental (not pragmatic objectives, just the whims of the most radical element of the DEP)

9) Recreational
20) Economic (the private sector middle class)

There is a very good book I just read about New Jersey. It is called "The Soprano State." Reality is even worse than the TV series. Anybody that thinks Menendez is getting railroaded by the Justice Department should read this book, they should lock up the whole state and throw away the keys.

Welllll ... it's not just New Jersey where reality is "The Soprano State". Take a close look at WHY Menendez is getting railroaded by a Justice Department that would normally give him a free pass. But politics isn't supposed to be the slant of my post (I know - I'm guilty).

The good news is that Sue is super-motivated to make a change that should provide more time and freedom for sailing greater distances! That more than compensates for the loss of this season!

Scott,

Do we now get a post from Sue asking: "What's the BEST boat to buy?" :)

Sorry for the bad news Scott. Glad to hear all that brainwashing of Sue using the subliminal tapes while she sleeps has finally paid off!

Downsizing=More sailing

I can vouch for downsizing. Did this three years ago. We moved into a villa and the HOA takes care of lawn care & snow removal. I no longer have to worry about mowing the yard multiple times a week. Now if I could get even closer to the boat.

Oh brother ...

Scott,

Do we now get a post from Sue asking: "What's the BEST boat to buy?" :)
I hope not! But, I might change my identity and post something along those lines. Would it be too suspicious if a new forum member posts that his Starwind 27 has been sold and he's currently looking for the best boat to sail to Australia, leaving from New Jersey in February?

I wish we could send you some of our excess. The lake I sail on is currently 15' above normal and rising.

Hmm, bigger boat, infinite waters, downsizing land and home.....sounds like you've got the right plan. At least you have a plan. The lake levels are subject to be a source of consternation indefinitely, seems to be.

Run, man, run..

Scott,

The Admiral and I just downsized our life. Sold the house and bought a travel trailer. We are attempting to build an RV shed and workshop on some land we have in central Texas but Mother Nature has basically stopped new construction in the area. While prepping for our move from the house to the travel trailer, we figured out that a lot of our "stuff" was not needed and could be donated or just trashed. "When was the last time you wore that?" "When was the last time you used that?" The answers to those questions put things into three stacks, "Keep", "Maybe" and "Donate".

We really need to go through the "Maybe" stack again and sort them into "Keep" and "Donate". But it has been a liberating experience to look at something and say "I haven't used/wore this since 2001 so why am I keeping it?"
