That explains the problem I had in March in the BVI where I used my iPad as a backup to paper. It was intermittent and I could get it working each time.

Maybe. I found out about this glitch a couple days ago down in Mexico, and couldn't resolve it at all.

Perhaps if all those Apple users wrote a little note to the company...

You call that a rant? I went off at Sprint yesterday because they change ("upgraded")my operating system in my phone without warning or permission. The kid asked me to leave the store. That's when the RANT began.

You probably scared him half to death, the poor kid.

Wish I had been there

This has been brought up several times by myself. The first I heard of this and reported it was the blind sailor running around in Hawaii because his iDevice locked up wanting to do an upgrade. Several post regarding using an iDevice has been posted with a warning to turn off ALL capabilities to upgrade the iDevice.

Now, Android isn't any better, but at least one gets a message that the system is about to update and one has the option to opt out.

So with that said...

IF YOU USE AN iDEVICE TO SUPPLIMENT YOUR NAVIGATION, MAKE SURE YOUR iDEVICE IS SET TO DECLINE ANY UPDATES.

Is it just me or is it fundamentally wrong to use a toy for a real and needed purpose?

Actually, I could have left the iPad's OS at version 8.2, and just ignored the little red sign, had I known about the glitch.

Hey, I ****** up. I trusted them. :D

Off topic here, but I work at a photo processing center and I scream (within reason) at customers to not use their toy camera on their cell phone.

And all this time, I've been mad at Apple for not letting me upgrade my Ipad 1. Seems I've dodged a bullet by being a Luddite.

To be clear, iOS WILL NOT install any operating system update without you agreeing to it explicitly at the time of the update.

Auto app update can be turned on; that's generally a bad idea for lots of reasons.

The following is true for any computer-related system: DO NOT do any SW 'upgrades' during 'mission critical' times. Even apps. Updating the OS of a device in these times is very risky.

PROTIP: Don't be the first penguin to jump off the ice flow. Wait. Check the message boards after a few days and see if there is a general outcry with lots of blood in the water. If it's quiet, install away!

Caveat

I agree. If you use other than a dedicated marine plotter what do you expect?
I'm fond of declaring that apples have worms, but to be fair, you have to update dedicated plotters too...and sometimes that poses its own set of problems.
