I am considering the purchase of a 1996 37.5 Hunter Legend. Is there anything I should be made aware of?

I have a 1990 legend 37.5. The only major issue i had was a soft foredeck core where the roller furling line goes through the foredeck into the furling drum. The PO had the area where the lines go through the deck sealed with epoxy, but i still have the soft foredeck. Planning on getting that fixed this upcoming winter.

Little things....batteries were at end of life, and alternator needed replacing. The forward hatch seal needed replacing, and some of the port holes leaked due to the screws holding the frames backing out due to contraction. I also needed a new pump assembly for the jabsco toilet. The raw water organisms had built up so much the joker valve wouldn't stay shut.

From a sailing perspective......she is tender. If the wind hits 15 knots the first reef goes in both main and jib. Wind 20 or above, second reef goes in. Squalls, I tend to go small piece of jib only if beating, or double reefed main alone if reaching. It takes some practice to heave to because of the yankee cut jib. Also, the wind speeds I mentioned are the gusts. I tend to reef according to the gusts so as not to get overpowered suddenly.

You asked about issues, so I wanted to answer your question. That said, I love my legend 37.5. She accomodates my family of 5 and two dogs just great! We sail all the time, even when winds are light with the asym spinnaker. I can give more benefits of the boat, if you'd like. Good luck.

Ben.

Some friends of mine have had theirs close to 20 years and love it. They took it all over the east coast and Caribbean and on to parts of South America. I asked them if they could go back and choose another boat they said they'd do the same thing all over again. They speak very highly of it but recommend several reef points in the main.

Hope it helps a bit.

Have owned a 96 37.5 since new. We are full time liveaboards and cruisers. We have traveled the east coast, Bahamas and the Caribbean. The boat has carried us through all sorts of weather and angry seas. I can't say enough about it. Just the right size for the two of us. Like any boat it is not perfect and will require some modifications/additions to suit your style of boating. Good Luck.
