Noisy Inverter

I have a Xantrex Freedom Marine 10 inverter, which came with my 2007 Hunter 33.

When it is in inverter mode, it emits a high pitch hum, not loud, but certainly noticeable enough to make watching TV unpleasant.

Is this common and is there anything thing that can be done to silence or minimize the awful noise?

Is it fan noise or vibration? Other than checking the unit case and attachment points to reduce any vibration there is little that can be done as components are not easily accessible and having work done in an older unit might not be economically justified. If the unit is working fine I would consider relocating it or relocating the TV to where the hum might not interfere as much. Keep in mind that the inverter should be fairly close to the batteries and if in an enclosed space there should be some ventilation.

My 2500 inverter does make some noise when charging but
only time we could hear any hum was when it was really quiet.
Check and see if some thing is loose or maybe the fan which I think is
in it to cool and as I said maybe a noisy fan and only guessing could be
going bad.
I had mine repaired a while back and was not cheap and if your is the older model they are easier to repair or replace parts some times and newer are all
circuit boards and if one little part is bad the whole circuit board needs replacing, that is what the repair shop told me.

The noise is not from the fan- its electronic- like the hum you hear from a florescent light fixture but slightly louder. It hums weather the tv is on or not, though I happen to be bothered by it more watching tv. The unit operates correctly in all other respects and it only hums when the inverter function is being used.

more than likely there is nothing you can do as the noise you describe is minute vibrations of the transformer being squeezed and relaxed by the magnetic field of the windings. Nearly all wound transformers make some noise, and in my experience the smaller they are the higher pitch they tend to be.

The high pitch is normal. Most inverters are housed in a compartment. Maybe add some insulation? Also try calling Xantrex.

--Or-- crank up the TV volume and go home theater mode.

Wrap some foam around it but leave the fan and other vent holes open. Engine box foam is made to stop low frequency vibration so it's not ideal, and it's expensive. You can get studio foam on eBay real cheap and it should work better.
