I just had a non boating person ask me this. When the yard prices a bottom paint job, are they pricing it on length at the water line? Or on Length Over All.

Depends on the yard - it's done both ways. In my experience, most use the LOA. When I bought my boat last year, the yard where it had been stored by the PO charged by LWL, which certainly seems more fair.

It doesn't matter.

If you are doing comparative shopping for your boat or even for someone else, it is the costs that are quoted to you that matter.

That's all.

Last week there was a discussion of how slip prices are determined.

Same answer.

All that matters is the $$ bottom line for your boat.

I used Yard GM for many years until the crook of an owner and I had a falling out. I fell out of his yard! I moved to Yard S. All I cared about was Yard S's cost for the same work with the same or equivalent paint. I also checked with Yard K, who were essentially the same but a three hour sail and three hours back. Wasn't worth it even if it had been $300 less expensive.

It's called comparative pricing. Or ask your wife about comparative shopping! :)

So tell your buddy to read this post. :)

PS - You could also analyze what makes up a bottom job. A small portion of it is the paint and labor.

I concur with Stu's first comment... it doesn't matter. I'm willing to bet that the price will be the same no matter what length you ask them to use. You're not going to gain any advantage by arguing with the yard how they come up with their price... Either you agree or not... So get a couple of quotes... give them both lengths ... if they ask you how wide the boat is.. then you might start negotiating for area. But honestly... the bottom line is all you should care about.

One place you can save some money.. kinda... is to have your diver clean the bottom the day before haul out.... then you can probably get along without paying for the overpriced power wash fee.
