There is a braided wire that connects the throttle lever to the engine, (Yanmar, 2GM). We have 1 strand of the braid remaining. Obviously, we need to replace it. Our problem is that we don't know what it's called. My husband never had a project boat before, (and oh boy, we've got one now), and always just hired someone to fix things on his boats. Now we're doing it ourselves, for the most part. I've studied the connection and am positive I can replace it but first I have to know what to buy and where to buy it. Anyone know the answer?

are you sure that wire is stranded and not a solid wire hooked up to the throttle lever....

those cables are call control cables and are usually solid wire core about 3/32 of an inch thick

oh and another thing the kill wire is usually braided ...the one you pull to kill the engine they both the throttle and kill wire go to about the same place on the engine

There is no kill switch on my 2QM either - not convinced they actually come with them.

I keep a dishtowel nearby to stuff into the air intake if the engine ever ran away

its not a kill switch as in electrical it is a lever like the throttle lever on the injector pump ....it stops the fuel flow in the injector pump when you pull the engine kill/stop cable

My QM kills when I pull the throttle all the way back.. Is it necessary to have kill cable? Do they both do the same thing, or is it better to use an actual kill cable?

Some engines are made that way. I don't know specifically about the QM, but some of the smaller Universals don't have a kill lever. If pulling the throttle back kills it, that's good enough.

Welcome.
Funny, My choke (what you pull near (to the left of) the engine key switch to stop the engine) at the panel stuck this spring for my 2GM20F.
In order to turn off the engine, you need to look at the front of the engine. On the starboard side (or left side if you are facing backwards toward the stern) under the water pump up front, you will find the end of a cable attached to a small bracket. If you push that aft (away from you when facing backwards) the engine will stop. I currently have to do that to shut the engine down. A rag is a great thing to have around to shut down a 'run-away diesel', but for general shutting down, use the choke.
Two cautionary notes:
Be careful of the rotating belts. Never wear loose clothing and be very careful of those spinning belts before you shut it down. Also, don't forget to bring the choke back to the forward position otherwise the choke will remain on and you won't be able to start the engine.
