The wood motor mount on my 23.5 needs some attention . It appears to be secured with two bolts . I want to know if these are machine threads on the other end embeded in a nut or how this comes apart and goes back together . I prefer to eleminate surprises before I take it apart .

there is an aluminum plate drilled and tapped inside the fiberglass. You may have a diffuicult time taking the bolts off due to being sealed originally with 5200, however, look aft in the boat to make sure if the previous owner did not mess the original attachment uup. If so, you will see bolts protruding thru with nuts on the inside.

I believe mine has been untouched. The former owner told me that they tried to take it off and it was impossible. They gave up. So whatever holds it on.... Really holds it on.

So I will need someone in the aft berth with a wrench to hold the nuts from turning ?

No, if it is the original setup there will be no protruding bolts as the embedded plate is tapped to accept the bolt threads. If someone messed with the original installation then you would likely see replacement bolts that protrude and are held by washers and nuts. In that case, you would need for a way to hold the nut in place from the inside while you remove the bolt from the outside.

Thanks Benny for advising.
Thank Benny and Dave for the advice . I removed the four bolts and noticed on the back side of the motor mount, the side facing the transom some cracking . It is horizontal and does not go all the way thru . I seem to recall a recent thread about this . But am having trouble finding it , The crack is actually between the bolts so it is hard to imagine if coming apart , but while I have it off I think I will fix it in some fashion . I thought of a stainless plate on the back of it or a stainelss sandwich in some fashion but not where the tension screws are . Thanks in advance , Mike i

MMsailor,

That crack could have very well happened during transport of the engine on the motor mount. With the back end of the boat and trailer bouncing going down the road, think about it. One way to help prevent that is to take a rope, oops, line, tie it to the motor and some where tied upward to the back end of the boat to help reduce that motor from bouncing.

As for the crack, you can dremel it out just thru the gel coat only, fill with epoxy and sand smooth. If it cannot be seen, go buy a can of Krylon Fusion white paint that closely matches and spray paint but do mask off the boat so no over spray will adhere to the boat.

Sorry Dave for the confusion . The crack in in the wooden motormount not the transom . I never ever trailer a boat with a motor on . I know that is a much discussed topic but with me it is a personal thing . I transport the motor in the back of the truck or whatever it is I am driving . Attaching the motor is part of setting up the boat to go in the water . Too old to change . Thanks for the advice as always . Are you all settled in to your new mountain top home ?

I have found a lumber yard that will make me a motormount the size I want out of yellot treated pine and I will end up with a piece of 4 x6 x10 minus the 17.5 inches . I was wondering as I was talking to the guy on the phone if it really has to be 2 inches thick . I use one of those rubber pads to reduce vibrations and with the 2 inch thichness it is a very tight fit . So I am wondering why I can't take a piece of 2 x6 and simply cut it to 17.5 inches and with the pad everything should work fine . That would give me more options for a different type wood that might hold up better and be stronger . So does the motor mount have to be exactly 2 inches thick or can it be 1 1/2 or 1 5/8 ? Thanks again . Mike

the thicker the better
Dave with that rubber pad it just barely fits as it is . I did find a plastic shop here that will make me one out of derlin for $220.00. I know it will last a long time but thats more that I had in mind to spend . I was hoping under $100.00 . I bought some stock from them last year and had a guy turn the sheeve for the centerbloard .So I know they are good people to deal with . Just was not sure if that 3/8 of an inch was that big a deal when I put that pad on top of it .

spend the money on the delrin as you will appreciate that one if you plan to keep the boat for a long time. I hated the wood.

Hello,
This is my first post. I got my 1995 Hunter 23.5 a few months ago and learned a tremendous amount of information reading this forum. Thank y'all!!

I am in need to replace the outboard board and purchased a pre-cut Delrin board online last week (not cheap!! :cussing:).

I have attempted to measure the distance between the bolts so I can drill it. Boat is on the water so not a very easy task.

I came up with 3.5" vertically and 14.5" horizontally.
Can anybody confirm these dimension? the 3.5" shall be pretty accurate but I am more concerned with the 14.5".

I know that it would be best to take the outboard and board off on the dry and measure it. Problem is that I wouldn't be able to drill the holes at the marina and complete the job on the spot.

Any help confirming the dimensions is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Marcohunter, I think drilling the new board will be the easy part. You need to remove the old motor mount board to replace, so do yourself a favor and wait to drill until the old board is off. Then, use that as a template. You'll also want to clean and reseal around the mount holes. This all seems physically possible on the water if you can have the transom facing the dock where you're sitting, but a lot easier project on the trailer. Also, consider starting your own thread when you're ready to start.

Marco,
And I guess I don't know why you couldn't drill two holes in the board at the marina. Do they not allow work or do you not have an adequate drill to use on site, in your own boat's cabin if necessary? I'd be concerned that every H23.5 dimensions for that board and mounting holes might not be exactly the same, but maybe someone else knows for certain. My 2 cents. Welcome to sailing!

Jeffclown, thanks for the good advise. I will definitely have the boat on the trailer when I decide to replace the board. I hope I can wait till the end of the sailing season so I can do it comfortably at home with all the tools (drill press especially) at close reach.
I will take pics and start a new thread so other members with same issue can take advantage of it.

Good source for the 23.5 on the forum. If you have any further questions, send me an email on the 23.5 and I will post what you ask and what I suggested. I know this boat.
