I have a 2006 Hunter 41 that has a leak on the starboard dead light, forward in the saloon. I would like to purchase a new lens rather than clean the old. Does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement?

I have a 2004 41. I have had small leakes around the lenses, which I attribute to pressure washing of the deck. The black sealant that fills the gap between the lense and the hull, looks fine but is actually separated. If you tape it off and apply some clear RTV silicone, I have had luck stopping these small leaks, and the repair is unnoticeable.

If the lense is scratched, I have had great luck with megires micro polish using a labs wool buff pad on a battery operated drill. It brought them back to new.

Good luck with what ever you try.

If you're looking for a temporary, easy, just for now, get around to it later kind of solution, you could go with the following which I have done for the second time ................. until I can get around to replacing the whole portlight and sealing it properly .

PM me if you want specifics.

Nick, I have looked here, don't find the product in the store.
IB and Ralph, I would like to pop the lens out and reinstall it so there will be no more problems. And IB I am guilty of pressure washing. I was really wondering if anyone knew where to buy the replacement dead lights from so I didn't spend 8 hours cleaning them. I'm pretty sure DOW 795 is the original sealant. I was also wondering if any one knew of something that didn't leak after 8 years. Thanks all

If they're not available here in the SBO store, you can remove your original one and use it to make a copy ................... if you have a hobby woodworking shop. Barring that, a plastic shop near you can fabricate a copy using your original as a template.

IMHO installation is critical on these larger windows as I think the thermal differential expansion is the killer which causes the leaks after a few years. It always seems to be the large forward portlights that leak. Don't seem to hear as much about the smaller side windows leaking.

I would email Marlow Hunter ask where or who makes them for
Hunter and what sealer they use.
I have used Meguires X Plastic with portable buffing to work real good.

Nick, they aren't scratched, the starboard one is leaking. How will Meguires help me?

OK

You did say clean so I thought it needed cleaning up but
try Hunter for info on replacing anyway.

The Dow Corning 795 isn't all that difficult to remove. I repaired some leaks around the "windshield" of our 376 last summer. It's probably not necessary to remove the whole lens to fix the leaks. But if you do, I think cleaning the lens will be a relatively minor part of the job. I would use a wire brush in a drill to get the last bits off the old lens. Get the finest wire brush you can find, about 2" diameter. Of course it will have to be masked to prevent scratching the wrong parts of the lens. Same applies to the boat.

I see RTV silicone was mentioned in this thread. That is NOT the same as 795. The right stuff can not be found at hardware stores or marine stores like West Marine. Even if it says "Marine" grade, RTV silicone has no place on a boat deck (IMHO). There has been quite a bit written about that stuff in other threads. Not good.

Get the 795 from McMaster-Carr or a local glass shop.
