Installed a new base for one of my foot blocks
How do you get a smooth finish on it?

Like Starboard, painting it is a complete waste of time. Nothing will bond permanently and chipping will always be likely.

This won't help if it's already installed but it edge finishes very nicely with a router set at high speed and a very light touch. Best done with a table router.

Using a mapp gas handheld torch, you can quickly run the tips of the blue flame over it and flame polish it like you would do to the edge of acrylic... but if you get it too hot it can make small pimples on it... go quickly and smoothly.
If you need more, let it cool completely before making another pass... its an art that gets better with practice, so practice on a scrap until you get it right...
The smoother it is with sandpaper, the finer the finish will be after flame polishing..

The mapp gas is the best as its much hotter than propane. With propane you need to go slower and the problem arises when the heat goes too deep into the delrin and the plastic releases gas bubbles, causing a blemished surface. The mapp gas being hotter needs to move more quickly does not penetrate as much and heats the very surface, giving it a satin polish...

Too much heat and you will have to re-sand and try again..

When flame polishing acrylic, you can get the edges as shiny as the surface

OK.........
For folks out there using delrin for anything on your boat blocks, bases what ever
Centerline nailed it.
Used propane torch and as exactly as he stated you have to be careful not to put too much heat on it or it will bubble

What I did was to pass the torch over the delrin and get it hot on the first couple of passes. Then I took a single edge razor blade and dragged it over the surface while it was still warm. You have to be careful in this because while the del is soft the blade can dig in. So dragged it a couple of times, this leveled the surface from the cut of the band saw. And as the surface got smoother the propane torch worked progressively better. Took about 5-6 passes but now have a great finish on my bases

Need to know something just ask this site

Amazing talent hear!!!!!!!
