I have a Yanmar 4JH2TE which has a mechanical fuel pump. I am about to fit a Racor 500 filter and was thinking about also fitting a 12v electric fuel pump at the same time- purely as it would provide me with automatic air bleed- IF it was ever needed- so purely as an added safety feature. Question is- does anyone know for sure if I can do this- i.e.- add a 12v fuel pump into my feed line , from the tank thus placing constant (fuel) pressure on the mechanical pump?

FWIW When my fuel pump failed on my 2gm20f my mechanic added an electric without removing the mechanical pump. Works just fine.

You could wire it so that it runs all the time the engine is, but it is not needed. If you feel that you want an electric pump to make air bleed easier, go for it, but put a switch on it and only use it when needed for bleeding.

I have a racor 500 that sits above the engine and fuel tank. Since the filters are top loaded, I have never had to bleed, other than after initial install, as the filter body stays full of fuel while you change filters.

I did it on my 1991 Legend 42 - no problem. Useful for polishing and pushing the air out of the racor. I used a diesel priming pump for a car which allowed the engine mechanical pump to pull through the stopped electrical pump
