We purchased a Hunter Vision 32 last August and I discovered someone plugged the fuel vent with caulk. Any theories why someone would do this?

Also, is anyone experienced with single line reefing on this boat. PO removed all the lines.

on the caulk thing clear it out so the tank can breath ......on the reefing system look at harkens site for info or i am sure there are enough hunter owners on her to help as well

I'm guessing it's not caulk...that it's actually a mud dauber nest...very common in the spring. They even like venturi tubes in gas grills. Check ALL you tank vents for blockages.

I've seen dauber nests and this definitely is not one. Could this have been for winterizing?

It's possible that the PO overfilled the tank one time and the result was fuel spewing out the vent. Aside from the potential for a major fine, it sure would be embarrassing. Perhaps he thought it was a good idea to seal the vent.

You may also be on to something with regard to winterizing. Some folks believe that the vent is a source of air which condenses water into the fuel tank in the winter.

But the reason doesn't matter, you should replace the vent cap if it can't be cleaned.

Rather terse.

I plan to clear it. Just curious if I was missing something.

The boom was made for single line reefing. Don't want a Rube Goldberg setup.

Single line, double line, or other: they each seem to have disadvantages. I prefer a 2 line system. It's easier to use in a hurry. No need to buy a system. The components are pretty straight forward.

The setup is a line for reef 1 and a line for reef 2. The system is called single line reefing because one need only pull one line to reef.

Though I agree you need a vent, there is a good chance that the PO had a reason (probably a bad reason, but a reason). Is it possible that the routing is such that seawater or rainwater was following the vent into the tank, and that rather than fix the problem, he plugged it? Check and see if there is a problem that needs fixed. It would be a shame to clear the block and then learn that the ocean now drains into the tank when heeled.

The vital thin with single line systems is that the blocks do not induce twist into the line; if so, they will eventually bind, causing the owner to rip the lines out in frustration, rather than working the twist out.

Rather terse.

I would also think the PO plugged the vent line due to fuel spillage. They make "check valves" so that the handle clicks off like it does when your car is full.
