Result of halyard wrap

Not my boat.
This is the result of a halyard wrap on a boat with a headsail furler.
Actually this is the result of taking the furler line to a winch when you have a halyard wrap.

Oh, that is frightening on more than one account! Those photos emphasize the importace of the proper halyard angle to the upper swivel or the need for a halyard restrainer.

Do you know if there was a halyard restrainer installed and what manufacturer of furler?

IIRC it was an older Hood furler and he did not have any kind of halyard retainer.
This is on an older Catalina 27.

looks like what I am replacing this spring.....same issue, halyard wrap.

That scares me because my furler feels stiff and I haven't checked to see that's wrong yet.
Scary.
Did I mention that's scary?

Mine did that too, but to the wire halyard, not the stay. Good excuse to go to all rope.

Ken, if your furler is stiff, it's probably just the bearings. If the halyard is wrapped, it won't turn at all once it comes up tight.
