Here is a good location to charter out of? I've always heard to stay away from the Athens area. I plan on going over a week earlier to visit the main islands. We plan on going the last half of Sept.

Thanks Bob.

Laviron.

You still fly into Athens, but you depart from the EAST side of the Attican peninsula. Puts you a day closer to the heart of the Cyclades. Pireas (Athens) is a PITA to depart from unless you are going straight to Poros. The Moorings (and several others) have bases at the world-class Olympic Marina.

Hello Bob, A phrase book will be of some value. To begin your verbal study memorize this useful phrase.........."Dio Alpha, para callo." ;) (Spelling might be a bit off, but those words will help you to politely get two bottles of the local beer.) Also, check the prevailing weather and the wind. We were in Greece during part of their windy season. (I don't remember the time of year or the name of the strong winds. Our visit was 1994 or 1995.) We were traveling by ferry between islands and found the routes cancelled two days. We also met some German cruisers who were forced to seek shelter due to the high winds. I'm sure your charter company will have suggestions on both of these topics and more. Best Wishes! Phil

The Meltemi winds should be over by the second half of September, it typically occurs in August. The one thing that you need too know that late is that some of the island establishments may be closed for the season by the time you arrive. This shouldn't be an issue on the larger islands/bigger towns but could be in some in the smallest locales.

This is very true, and can sometimes be a bit of a pain when visiting some of the smaller ports. We often go very early in the season (hell it's still winter) and are the only visiting yacht. Many times the owner of one of the quayside tavernas will turn on his lights and come down to the water and offer to open. And will cook whatever you want, sit, chat, and drink wine. We've made some good friends doing this!

Here's Pia, at a taverna in Loutra on Kythnos. We're the only people in the place. Free bottle of wine, and we download the next two days GRIB weather data as we wait for our food!

As already Jackdaw said, you can avoid Athens and go to Lavrio. It is not very crowded like Athens and you can find whatever you want. I do not know for what are you looking for but i suggest you to find the boat that fits you better from any place and ask about transfering the boat at at Lavrio if you do not find something interesting there. September is generaly a more peacefull period than other months so it will easyer to find whatever you want!
