How does one USE a waterline?

The Coast Guard made us put little white stripes at the waterline on each side of the bow and transom (commercial passenger vessel) so you could see if she was sinking at the dock, well before the high water alarm would sound.
Temperature and salinity make a big difference on freighters. Every freighter has a load line figure marked on reach side amidships, looks kind of like a bar graph, and shows the maximum load point for salt or fresh, tropical or cold water conditions.

How does the manufacturer know where to paint the waterline before they splash it the first time and if the splash it just to find each boats unique waterline, wouldn't it change due to the weight of the paint or do they just guess where the waterline might be based upon the previous one? And then what if someone lays up an extra layer of glass or user a 1/2" core instead of a 5/16" core... This must be very confusing to the boat builder. I am willing to offer my consulting services to the industry, write a few white papers, presentations at gatherings... maybe even a column in one of the fine magazines.... Hmmm a good solid second career.

And if that doesn't work out, I think we could all form a nautical comedy troupe. Think about it. HBO specials... Movies.. Travel.. Red Carpets... Maybe this is really bigger than a big fat waterline! Anyone interested in volunteering to be SBO's Nautical Comedy Troupe Agent or manager?

The naval architect had all that worked out based on the boats designed displacement. That includes tankage and "normal" stores and belongings, etc. By the time we load all our stuff on for a cruise, the line ends up a couple inches low.
My Columbia 36 was designed to have an Atomic 4, but mine had the Albin diesel which weighs like twice as much. She was trimmed down at the stern by about two inches, but now since I've repowered with a smaller Universal, she's back on her lines.

In the Navy, an important task for a new sailor might be to quickly procure 100 ft of waterline, which could require asking several others and a crusty old chief, with multiple chapters to the project. Similar mildly sadistic training was sending a new mechanic to the quartermasters (navy navigators) for a can of relative bearing grease - a must have item for engine maintenance. For any new boat owners... does the SBO store carry relative bearing grease?
Not so much on the newer boats, but I remember being asked to go down to the boiler room for a bucket of steam.

I know several marine designers/architects, and they all take is as a matter of professional pride to get waterlines right.

It involves the boats overall design plus its design load. It effects the draft, LWL (Load Waterline Length), and wetted surface area.

Plus no one wants the bootstripe on their new boat to be under water.
