Main Sail

The main sail on our Hunter 336 is worn out. We want to replace it with a new, or good used, sail without the huge leach that the factory sail has.
Any recommendations on what boat or sail would make a good replacement? And, any ideas of where to purchase a good sail for this boat.
Thanks, Jon

Why do you want to get rid of sail area which the large roach can provide due to the designed absence of a backstay. That area gives you a lot of drive.
Your Hunter 33 likely has a low SA to begin with.

try http://baconsails.com/ . I know you're on the West Coast, but Bacon's has a large selection of various quality used sails. They also make nice new ones through a 3rd party, but that might be problematic for you considering your location, however if you give them a leach & luff they'll give you a quote

Good point. However it seems we are always reefing the maiin as it overpowers the boat. Were casual sailers and the boat heals a lot with stiff winds which is uncomfortable for the gals which are not accomplished sailors. A few sailmakers I talked to both recommended cutting down the roach a bit if they were to make a new one. I was hoping to find a used sail which would fit that boat. Thanks for your response

I thought my 340 main was wore out because it had way too much "belly" and lots of wrinkles. But I had the rig tuned by someone familiar with B&R rigs and got the right prebend, and I had the luff of the main recut, about 4" taken out. Several battens had to be shortened. The sail is way better, we still have to reef at 15, but the boat balances better and heels less. I'll still need a new main in a few years if I keep the boat, but it has made our sailing better for now.

Problem with finding a replacement sail is the 336 only had a three year run with that sail plan. Probably wont happen. You can get most reputable sail lofts to make you a new one. They even have them here. The high roach main is what seperates the 336 especially in lite airs.

When you say worn out, exactly what do you mean? Dirty, stretched or blown out in places?

Couple of questions

Do you have a rigid vang? If you do then unhook your topping lift and secure it to the mast. That will keep it from hanging in the roach of the main when you tack.

Reefing in 15 knots? Yes or ease the vang and dump the air out the top and let the sail out to the spreaders. If it really tough on the crew just flake it and sail on your jib. The boat actually does quite well.

336 is a pretty good bang for the buck. A lazy jack system is almost a must for securing that big sail.

Cheers

That boat is much too new to have a worn out sail. I would suggest to take it to a sailmaker and have him fix any worn stitching, cut and wash the sail. It may be hard to find a used replacement sail so fixing and modifying the one you got might be the best option.
