What is the maximum buffer speed I would ever need to use

When selecting a buffer what is the maximum speed I would realistically need? I have my eye on a used Milwaukee but the max speed is only 1750 rpm.

Is this a good fit?

Thanks

You'll need to look at the product(s) you'll use with it, they'll have recommended speed ranges.

that should work good.. if the wheel turns too fast, 3 bad things happen.
1, it builds heat quickly and will burn the finish...
2, its more difficult to keep the compound on the pad...
3, the buffer pad clogs up much quicker...

the coarseness of the grit/compound will make a much bigger difference in how fast it cuts, than does the speed....
but generally, the coarser the grit, the faster you can turn the pad without it over heating, but then you risk removing too much....

my buffer is adjustable and I like to run it about 1300, and then vary the amount of pressure I use against the surface depending on how much i need to cut.

is that buffer variable speed if not not sure i would want it 1750 rpms is a lot of speed for buffing

It is variable speed

It is variable speed, but the max speed is 1750. I think the last time I used my friends buffer I ran the speed around 600RPM while I did my hull.

I just do not want to make a investment now and then later if I need a higher speed unit.

It depends upon how good you get. Once you get good you'll be wishing for speeds above 1750.. Also the Milwaukee, if it is the 54XX 1750 RPM model, is heavy at nearly 9 pounds.....

Great durable machines but not one I would personally choose for buffing work... The buffer most marine guys use is the venerable Makita 9227C and it is under 7 pounds. This is a time tested and field proven buffer. That 2 pounds makes a difference after a days work and you can run from 600 to 3000 RPM if or when you need it............

Maine's point about the weight is a good one. I bought the Makita on his recommendation and really appreciated its relatively light weight when reaching out or up to barely-accessible locations on my hull and dodger.

FWIW
Support part or all of the tool's weight from a bungee cord on the main or jib halyard, respectively. The longer the bungee cord the better. With internal halyards, hoist a small block with a reeved line aloft so the bitter end can be tied off at your belt for easy adjustment.
What the heck, it was Gudenuph for me.

What a great idea!

Hope I can remember it when the snow goes away..........in August!!

Sounds like the Makita is the one

I guess I will have to keep my eye out for a Makita.

Does the 9227C make easy work of tight spaces topsides?

Well, as easy as any other buffer with a 9" spinning disc. Tighter than that, no. ;o)

I use a porter cable random orbital variable speed buffer and get great results... With the random orbital its really hard to burn or ruin the gelcoat.

Ok so if i go with the Makita, what kind of bonnets should I buy and how many.
I only wax my hull once a year and as you can see from the picture it does not look to bad.
My cabin and deck is where I need to do some work.
