Home Port

MacGregor 25 Lake Tahoe
I am thinking of naming my MacGregor 25. Since it is on a trailer what is the boats home port? It is registered in the high desert city of Reno, NV. The registration is for Lake Tahoe Only to avoid repeated environmental inspection/cleaning fees. So is the home port Tahoe or the water poor Reno?

I was thinking of naming it the Pisco Sour, but my wife wants me to name it after her recently deceased mother, Grecia. After a loved one or a loved drink?

Well...

Nelson Amen, who just finished the "Havasu light" named his boat after his Mother - "Tootsie". He always claimed that it brought him luck...

Our trailerable is named "Teliki", from the names of our children (TEgan, LIndsey, KIra). Always brought us fair winds.

Your wife is right - go for a loved one :)

On one hand, I don't beleive you really have to have a home port at all, but NV may have their ways about that. If it's lake-only, I'd put Reno, as you may find boating neighbors that way.

You home port is "where the heart is".... so put whatever you want to identify your boat to others. It's different for documented vessels.. but you'd know that if yours was documented.

FYI there are a number of 50 ft plus yachts in our basin's four marinas that hail from landlocked ports, such as Tucson, Reno, Phoenix.. and there one claiming Barstow as home.(!!!!) etc...

Documented boats require a "home port." I doubt your boat is documented so just give it a name. You won't see a home port on those thousands of runabouts buzzing around on the lake.

For peace and harmony, the mothers name. No question..
That'll never happen here. I can't imagine naming a boat after my wife's mother-in-law. My vote is to use whatever name your wife prefers. Peace and harmony will reign forever. EDIT: Oh crap! I misread the question! Name it after your wife's deceased mother! Peace and harmony will reign forever!

I vote for "Lake Tahoe" ....

Sue and I saw a beautiful 60 something foot Morris (or maybe it was some other equally impressive brand) sailboat at the Annapolis boat show and the home port was "Aspen".

This pretty much turned me off as the pinnacle of pretentiousness. It seemed to say to us that this rich a-hole isn't content enough to display the boat as evidence of such excessive wealth, he (or she) needed to display that their home was actually in Aspen, where they undoubtedly have an even more excessive display of wealth (and probably a vacation home to boot). I couldn't think of any other reason for the owner to display Aspen as the home port for a vessel that obviously resides in salt water. If it said "Newport" or "Annapolis", that's fine, but it seemed like an unnecessary display which says "look how wealthy I am!"

Now, your trailer sailer will undoubtedly NOT generate any such thoughts of class envy from most of us :D, so "Lake Tahoe" or "Reno" are equally appropriate, I think. Reno is distinguished as the "Biggest Little City" is it not? (Love the movie "Waking Up in Reno" ... cheezy as it is. RIP Natasha Richardson & Patrick Swayze).

Go for the mother. I surprised my wife by naming our boat after her mother. Her full name was Reba Gladene but she always went by Gladene. The boat is christened Reba Gee.

Lake Tahoe is way classier than Reno, IMHO. Keep it registered in Reno however and avoid &^%$ Californication taxes.
As far as the name compromise and start making your sours out of Pinot Brandy and name it "Pinot Grecia."

Given the choices I would think that Lake Tahoe would give the inspectors a good clue that you are a local and likely reduce pull overs. Regarding the boat's name I will not fall into that trap, you are on your own.

Instead of a home port on the stern, just put your zip code... right next to the sign that says "this end up".

Homeport story:

We put our town where we live as Impetuous' homeport. It's a small town with one traffic light and a gas station. It's so small that Texas didn't put up a population sign. Anyway, we stop in Venice, La (another really small town) for fuel and showers and a guy walks up to our boat and wants to know if we know so and so who lives on the east side of our town. Evidently, they are in-laws of this guy. We talked for a bit and found out who all we both knew.

So there ya go. Another vote for your hometown no matter how landlocked it is. You might meet neighbors out there. Just an aside; the location on the profile is her marina. I figured people could find that town. LOL

Yeah, I agree. I do marvel at the boats at our marina on a naval air station with home ports all over the place, yet I suspect that most were just where the owner(s) are from, and have little to do with the boat's history.

I opted not to put a home port on our boat, and I don't feel particularly out of place for that where we sail.
