In my opinion, if a wind instrument can't communicate with the speed instrument or the gps to give you TRUE wind direction and speed, it is a complete waste of money in this day and age.... None of the Moor products are nmea or seatalk capable. Old school, out dated.
Keep looking... for instance, the Raymarine i40 series is affordable and can be tied into a network... and doesn't look like an old analog fuel gauge.
Geez Joe...My 35 yr old S2 still has the original Datamarine stuff and it works great. I prefer to have APPARENT wind indication. I can see these instruments from anywhere in the cockpit and not have to plant myself in front of a screen. I do have plotter/radar/AIS etc but I like my arrangement!
Mark, that's great that your 35 year old stuff still works... maybe 35 years ago I might have bought it myself.... but this is 2015... and this person wants to buy new stuff for his refit...so for the same money he can get an instrument that allows him to choose between apparent and true by just pushing a button.
Let me ask you this... if your 35 year old analog apparent wind indicator broke today would you spend $500-$800 to replace it with the same model?
No.. But I might spend a few hundred to fix it. I've always liked to leave speed/wind/depth off of the networks. My plotter etc are Raymarine utilizing SeaTalk NG. One of the things I do Not like is having to supply ships power as a separate fused connection to "power" the data bus. Lose one fuse and all ur ancillary data is gone. So I leave the basics alone....if/when all my Datamarine stuff kaputs, I'll have to make some decisions......
Let's see, we recently had to replace some of our Raymarine instrumentation after 14 years as we could no longer read the displays. If you could tell me that some old school manufacturer is still making instruments that could last 30+ years I would have given replacing the entire lot some serious consideration. I think a fair basis for comparison is a combination of price, quality and longevity, and what would differences in features do for us. I have to say that for me if the prices were the same I would value quality over features every time. It seems that components that talk to each other like GPS, Auto Pilots and wind instrumentation are the rage but I'm old school and feel that I'm there to do the talking for them. Don't want to be just a passenger in an automated vessel. I may be old, but still more reliable than all them electronics.
Moor Apparent Wind Meter...
I replaced a defunct Std Hor. wind instrument with the Moor analog wind and digital speed instrument a few years ago (price then was about $400). It has worked flawlessly ever since. I was able to reuse the in-mast wiring without having to pull in new wiring (supplied with the unit). They were the only one making a round display head unit at the time.
Joe's solution may be fine for him, but turn a gremlin loose and see what happens! :dance:
Besides, I get "True Wind Speed" every time I tack when I go head to the wind. On boats I've raced on, we've had "true wind" capability, but we've not used it. On my boat I've found that the apparent wind angle and speed were adequate determiners of when to reef/furl/tack.
Oh yeah, my GPS gives me speed over ground, and the knot meter shows speed through the water, the difference of which shows me the current.
Beyond that, I just sail!

BTW; DMImarine, the caretakers of Datamarine products, have NMEA connections with their Phoenix Series instruments which are direct replacements to your old instruments.
This is not meant to instill a controversy between apparent and true data, network or non network differences. It's about value and function. If you want to spend $500+ on a wind instrument that can only give you the same info a windex or tell tale can.... go for it. We owe it to the poster to tell him there are limitations to the product he's asking about. If he thinks he's saving money by buying a new instrument with 40 year old technology...he needs to know there are similarly price units that off more features.
