Saw this lid support at a boat show recently. It's 2 pieces, one fits into the other and are held together with an internal bungee. Anyone have any idea where the can be purchased?

I assume it is to stop the lid from opening too far, not to "support" it? Looks like a piece of pretty chain would serve the same purpose. It looks like one of the gung-foo fighting things(nin-chuks?), so maybe try one of those shops? I think they are not legal, though.

Nope, it works both ways, but mostly to support. The upper end fits into the lower end to support, and once separated, allow the chart table to close. It was OEM installed on our H340, so maybe Phil has some in the SBO Store?

we have installed a 'spring hatch holder' on several boats nav stations, having grown tired of having to hold it open with my head, or dropping it on my fingers. available at nearly any online or local chandlery.

Thanks all! This is just to hold up the lid when I need to shuffle stuff around in there. I saw the Moonlight Marine spring type and am considering those.

I've also tried 2 different inexpensive box lid holders (attached to side of compartment and bottom of lid). They don't work with my lid. The hinge is mounted to the back edge of the lid, not the bottom. With the hinge there the geometry is funky - the bottom of the lid actually swings out when being opened. Not much, but enough so that the 2 lid holders I tried would not collapse all the way.

Spring type has always worked on our boats for small to large hatches. They are very easy to install and give no resistance to opening and closing. Seem to last forever. Usually one of the first "upgrades" to a new boat we do.

I have seen those advertised to keep hatches open. Look for them under deck fixtures.

They have them here in SBO. You can ask Phil for specifics but this one fits my 41 and should work on any lid. Those springs can collapse when you hit them and the admiral has had many a complaint on the last boat which had them on the fridge lid. Cussing from the galley is never good.

After nearly breaking fingers several times with those spring holders, I got rid of them. All you need to do often is just barely bump it and down comes the hatch.

Never again

tsbb, that's true, however, what I find is that is a very useful thing. Once you learn the trick, it becomes a one handed operation.

Your boat, your choice.

Good point. Please note the uses I've made of these. NONE of them are for what could be a HEAVY hatch, but rather for lighter things.

Choose wisely.

The link is to a prop rod not a spring rod, just to make sure we're all on the same page. And they are available on SBO.

Uncledom, is that prop you linked to the same kind as the original poster pictured? I think the original prop was clever. I don't need one myself, but I want to remember it if I need one.

It's close. It is two pieces with a bungee connecting them and does not collapse. It was stock on the nav lid of my 2006 41 and the link should bring you right to it on SBO.

Maybe a piece of light line, attached overhead with a hook on the end and eye on the lid? Sometimes the simplest solution is the most secure, Steve.

Another problem I've h had with the springs is if the lid closes on the spring, trapping it between the lid and cabinet, the spring will kink and not work anymore.

that spring that Stu has recommended is a lot tougher than one might think
