Tank Monitoring

I just crossed info on web about tank monitoring with no electrical involved. Just air pressure …
“Hart Tender System”. Does anybody installed this? How reliable it is? Looks to be very simple etc…
Thanks,

Tantor,

My original level gauge was a tank top mechanical float type. I opted for a sending unit to my new engine panel only to find that every 3 years I needed to replace it.

I went back to the old tank top mechanical float I still had. Sometimes simpler is better.

Which tank? My plastic black water tank I can just shine a flashlight into one end and see the level on the side. For RVs (water) there are lots of monitoring systems. for fuel, not too many choices.

Ken,

I assumed Tantor was asking about his fuel tank.

I don't remember seeing a level gauge used for fresh water tanks in C30's. I have the polypropylene tanks for water & a black waste tank used for........well you know.

Tantor,

I looked into them some time back. They looked very good, but the price was WAY WAY WAY out of line for what it is!

I went with the WEMA system instead and they have worked GREAT since about 1998. I have had one sending unit fail, but it may have been my fault. I use them for one fuel tank and 2 fresh water tanks.

All my sending units are WEMA. I had to replace 2 in the water tanks and they faild too... reed switches are bad in the unit. This is reason I am looking into matter what would be the best solution. I have polypropylen tanks they are translusent, but for convenience I prefer some level gauges.
Hart unit are unresonable expensive... I looked at the parts needed to ass'y unit and cost is less then $150...
I am making my own!!!

WOW, I am surprised of the WEMA failures. The one I had fail was an older plastic unit and it failed due to a break from washer sloshing in the tank and hitting the plastic. I towed the boat with water in the tank. Water then got into the reed switch area and after a few months began to give bad readings. I have now replaced it with a new model that is now made of metal.

If you can make your own pressure system, I would think it would work very good! It was just the cost of the ready made unit that took me back a step.

The tank tender has been around a while and most I see are inoperable. They work best on water tanks and the dip tubes tend to plug with effluent on holding tanks.

Airmar has some new tank transducers out which should prove to be great units. These units are made by Offshore Systems in the UK and distributed in the US by Airmar. They are a no moving part product, no cleaning etc. and are NEMA 2000 tank sensors for fresh or black water. They run about $180 - 230 each.... Just install the senders and plug into the NEMA network and most plotters can display the tank levels. No proprietary display should be necessary if you have a compatible N2K plotter/system.

Xintex also has some pneumatic tank sensors but I have had to repair/replace a lot of the older style LMM-1's and they made the new ones non-backward compatible, a real PITA to say the least. Lots of Tiar's came from the factory with these and I have fixed my fair share.........

Maine, The Airmar units look interesting. Do u have first hand experience with them? Wondering how those rods hold up against sloshing liquids?
