What is this anchor chain and swivel on a Beneteau 311?

Merry Christmas!

I have a Beneteau 311 built in 2000. I am the third owner. The boat came with an anchor chain and windlass. The chain is stamped "ITAL Y98" on one side and "HT - C" on the reverse side. It appears to be galvanized chain. I have a Simpson-Lawrence Horizon 600 windlass, with a RC 076 gyspy. I cannot find out anything about this chain online. Can anyone tell me something about the source and specifications for this chain?

For a follow-up question, there is a chain to anchor swivel that is cylindrical and made to fit through the anchor roller. It is stamped "King Italy Brevettato" on one side, and "INOX AISI 316" and SWL Kg - 630" on the other side. There is a "K" with a circle around it above both lines. I'm guessing that the swivel is 316 grade stainless steel, and the safe working load is 630 kg, or 1389 pounds. I know there is a some advice out there about not using these kind of swivels, because they can theoretically come apart if twisted the just the wrong way, but a conventional shackle will not fit through the anchor roller. Does anyone know anything about this type of shackle?

Don't you have the windlass manual, or have you googled it? Everyone should search and print out manuals for ALL their boat's gear... BEFORE you need it. Google the windlass, and that will tell you what chain SHOULD be on that windlass, not what someone else may have put on it.

Ron20324,

I have the manual for the windlass, and it says that the gypsy will take 1/4" or 7 MM chain, and 1/2" or 12 mm rope. Four types of chain are listed, including American ACCO BBB, American G-4 ISO, and two European types. The windlass company has been taken over by Lewmar and this type of windlass is no longer made. My chain appears to fit the windlass very well and is probably original equipment supplied by Beneteau. The chain appears to be a normal size for the boat and windlass, and may be high test chain given the "HT-C" stamp. But I don't have any information on this chain. Possibly the chain was made to a European or Italian spec that has been superseded.

There seems to be a trend away from mm-sized chain as it is too difficult to find- especially in remote islands. In American chain, HT would be G4 stamped on each link. If you ar buying new chain, I'd take the gypsy and make sure the new links fit. That, or get a short length from the dealer and take it home for a fitting. Cut chain is probably not returnable. I could be wrong about your boat, but when I bought mine, I believe the dealer local-sourced alot of the equipment. I did not want the anchor and rope rode, so did not get charged for it. So, I doubt Beneteau does not even know what is on the the boats- unless yours came from France that way?

Ron20324,

My boat was made in the US (S. Carolina, I think) but seems to have some European equipment. It seems unlikely that the builder in S. Carolina or the dealer on Lake Michigan would import Italian chain and swivels, so I'm assuming Beneteau in France procured these elements. I'd still like to know if anyone on this forum knows what my who made the chain and swivel, and what the specs are?

1. If you don't know now, think about it - if you can't find out, you have to ask yourself if it really matters, basically or even at all.

2. Swivels? A stupid concept, inherently, IMHO and in the opinion of others:

You might go to Lewmar's website and initiate a contact with their tech support people. I have had good experience dealing with them on similar types of issues related to specs on older equipment.

I'm guessing that the swivel, if manufactured in Italy, may be a Kong. Have a look here and see if the logo is the same as what is stamped on yours.
