I hear people calling on the radio with a tricky name, and they have to spell out the name to the receiving party.
You were thinking ahead, I've considered that when naming my kids. You gotta go out and yell it from the back door a few times to see how it works. As for the boat. We kept it simple (and clean) I am glad I lost the vote. We ended up with 'OHANA which works on the radio well

Some people here use their legal names, but most of us use an 'nom du guarre' than has particular meaning to us. What's yours?

:snip
AT some point the "naming" rules were changed to keep our email safe from intruders. But I like my name, as it described us: Me, my bride (2 or us) liked to sail (We2Sail), We got around the renaming rule by using, what I think is a YYDDD motif (two digit year: 12 and the day of the year (113, or somewhere around April Perhaps to coincide opening season up north on Buzzards Bay.)

My avatar, I swiped from another user, a roguish pirates grin on seeing some modern day booty, and use, that would precede a hookup. (Check with your teenagers, if otherwise unclear). Yuck Yuk,

Bob

Great idea for a thread. My user name is my initials & last name followed by my "lucky number" which is the day of the month I was born. I've used "17" whenever possible in sports and elsewhere over my lifetime. My boat is named by combining all three of my daughter's names - s/v CaiLeigh Anna.

wingnut/boston, my username.

before sailing i was a commercial lobsterman and my first lobster boat was a keel less 26 ft novi which was very hard to keep into the wind when pulling pots and would spin in circles when hydraulics were applied.and of course another lobsterman commented i looked like a wingnut and even though i later purchased a bigger boat with a full keel and didn't spin in circles anymore i was forever known in the fishing community as wingnut/boston.

OK, my user name is actually my real name. But all my email goes to posah2vai. I think I mis-typed it the first time I used it. It's either posah to vai or posah tai vo in the original Navajo. Translates as "Crazy White Man" which seems appropriate for an idiot who sometimes sailed a daysailer in Galveston Bay during a cold front passage.

LUVInIt came from the stock symbol of Southwest Airlines. I was lucky enough to have been a Captain at SWA until retirement due to the former age 60 rule. I considered Mr. Herb Kelleher as my mentor while working there as many of us did. I honored my Hutchins Compac 25 by associating my respect for Herb in her name, thus "LUVInIt."

TFrere means little brother in French. T for petite and Frere means brother. Actually my father's first and middle names are Thomas Frere. His mother's maiden name was Frere. All his life, he has gone by the name T Frere. I use it in honor of him.

My name actually came with the boat.
As I was cleaning her out I found a box containing the lettering. I thought it fitting as I immediately began to have dreams of bigger adventures.
My signature is borrowed, but I thought it fitting also.

You are not in darkness that this Day should not over take you as a thief
You are all sons of the Day. (should be)
We are not of the night, nor of darkness (evil thoughts dreams and intents of the heart)
therefore let us watch and be sober.
for those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night
But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breast plate of of faith and love,
and as a helmet the hope of Salvation

Inara was a name that I just came up with one day. It is closely spelled to a spa in my area, but I didn't like it so I changed a couple letters. It grew on me at some point I googled it only to find out that it really was a name - a Hittite goddess, and a character on Firefly. Neither of them are terribly bad so we used it. I added the 'three' cause I figured I won't have more than an Inara, and an Inara II.

Saxacussionist comes from my love of music. I have played drums since Jr. High. About 4 years ago I decided to take up the saxophone as well. I play the sax every Sunday at church with a group of of other musicians in the church. I also play on a once-a-month rotation for solos. I write all my own arrangement for those. I play the drums and some sax for 'The Stevil Dan Band' which is basically a bunch of old guys who never really grew up... Our playlist is mostly classic rock covers from the 70's - 80's - early 90s, with a few newer songs and some country thrown in to the mix so there's something for everybody!

Mine comes from my favorite book series and one of the lands in it, D'Hara. The series is the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. Found it when I was younger and find a lot of inspiration in it. Second is fairly self explanatory here.
Very cool. I am still trying to convince the first mate that SOT is really an extremely long love story.

As for my stage name it too is fairly self explanatory. FWIW my boat named is Easy Wind. My dog is named Bertha. My last dog was Althea. And In 1994 we incorporated a second business called Blue Sun Corporation ("the sky was yellow and the sun was blue"). My business partner & I met at Rutgers College of Engineering in 1981 - we were both wearing tye dye shirts.

When I got married my wife and l liked Golden Retrievers. We've most always have had two and always named them after songs we like and sometimes with a second meaning as well. I was a volunteer firefighter at the time I joined the internet and one of our dogs was Smokey. ("Smoke gets in your eyes") so I used Smokey the Bear for my online name. Then I joined a forum that only allowed real names. It was an attempt to keep users civil as some of the other forums in the same hobby seemed to be non so civil when using made up names.
So I started using my real name on any forum I joined.
Actually I like addressing someone by his or her given name but that is just me. I'll call anyone want they want to be called.

As for our boat name, we always vacation on Long Beach Island and would go to a park on the bay to watch sunsets and if a full moon, to watch the moon on the water. We envied seeing the sailboats out on the bay and decided to get a sailboat and join them.
Our boat name "Moon Shadow" came from the Cat Stevens song and had the double meaning we wanted.
On our second vacation with Moon Shadow we hit a triple.
We sailed on the bay while watching the sunset and then the wind died. We floated for half an hour and saw some meteors from the Orionids meteor shadow. Then we looked east and watched the full moon rise over LBI with the Barnegat Lighthouse flashing near it.
Now I always check the moon phase and when we can time it right we create a Moon Shadow.
