New Boat Tax

So where does this end? If they charge a fee for this service why not every other service the government provides? Now the CG has to hire people to handle the checks, take them to the bank and cash them, accountants to keep the books, distribute the funds into the general funds. Could it be this is just to make a few more government jobs?

Hey- my boat isn't documented-it's state registered. I have to pay a registration fee every other year?

Why not take my fees out of general funds? I pay my taxes?

Pretty silly question huh? Why in the world should everyone fund a documentation fee on a pleasure yacht?

Once they establish the existence of a fee, I think it is easy for them to increase the fee.

not everyone takes books out of the library, maybe there should be a fee to check out books? Not everyone has a fire, maybe if you have a fire you should pay a fire department fee. Not everyone is robbed, maybe if you call the cops you should pay a police fee. Not everyone needs an ambulance.....

Yah, it's all there, in black and white, in that "social contract" you signed.

Good day, sir! :D

Jibes, I couldn't up-vote your post anonymously, so I'll do so "in person".

Some states (mine for instance) require state registration in addition to documentation. So there is no savings by have a documented vessel. I kept the documentation current because I view documentation as a better way than a state issued title to prove ownership. I think a fee is acceptable if the length of documentation could be extended from one year to something longer. It's a waste on everyone's behalf to re-document every year. I bet a private entity could keep these records just as well with a smaller fee.

Hey you own a boat and everyone knows that that boat is a money pit
and we are enjoying and when you enjoy something you need to pay for it.
I wish alot things were so cheap.

Since it is Washington State Law that we register our boats each year and now a copy of that registration must be on file with the yacht club (not sure about Marinas) I see no advantage to paying $26 to document my boat. The annual registration fee (tax) on my boat has ranged from $1100 to now a paltry $600 since I bought it in 2003.

Except all the things you have listed are for the benefit of the entire community. Paying a registration fee on a PRIVATE "something" is a bit different. The boat is for YOUR personal pleasure, NOT the communities. Why should they help pay for it?

It's not a 'tax'; its a"fee". All of us 'rich' boat owners should just smile and say "thank you, may I have another".

They are Eventually Going to Find a Way to tax EVERYTHING

When the government figures out a way to tax sex and hangovers I'm screwed.

We should all be thankful for the service the CG performs for us. They put their lives on the line every day. $26 to cover a part of the cuts to their budget doesn't seem to be a lot!

I donate to the Coast Guard Foundation because I appreciate the rescue missions they do - so far not for me. Before I agree that that a $26 fee is warranted I would like to see that the CG actually has reduced funding.

Sex??????

For what the CG does day in and day out they deserve it for sure and because it
is for the CG I would pay double for sure and it is not a tax it is a small price to pay for what they do and just let it go and we need to support these guys.
The CG is one of the few things helping us out on the water and I feel good
when I see them patrolling and my wife feels safer when she sees these young men and woman wave to us as they go by.
It's the US Coast Guard and we need to support them.
