Kenyon Boom End Sheave Axle Pin Removal

I'm trying to remove the Sheave Axle Pin on my 1986 Hunter H34 with a Kenyon #3550 Boom and K-11472 Internal Outhaul assembly. Does anyone have experience with doing this and what is the best procedure to use.

I recently bought replacement reefing sheaves and I have a new main sail on order so I would like to have the new reef lines ready to go when the new sail gets here.

Looks like to me you only have to drive the pin out. Hopefully you don't have to press the pin out. I can't tell from the pictures if there is any locking device to hold the pin in. I would try a small punch and hammer and see if you get it to move.

Thanks. I've tried that but it didn't move. No locking device that I can tell. One side is sticking out more then the other side. I also don't really know what direction to move the pin.

I suppose I could try punching it out with more force but I would want to be sure I'm going in the right direction first. I could also try removing the assembly then trying to remove the pin at a work bench.

if you remove it from the boat and can't push it out at home then I would look for a machine shop to use a press and press it out. You can press things out in a vice. Iv'e done that with u-joints

Removing the assembly might be the easiest, providing you can get those screws holding it on loose. That way, before you re-install the screws you can coat them with anti seize paste. The screws may require an impact screwdriver that rotates when you hit it with a hammer. They sell those at Harbor Freight, or Sears.

Regarding that pin, I can't remember on mine if it comes out in one direction only. I thought it has a cross drilled hole and there is a screw that goes into the aluminium piece and into that cross hole to keep it from sliding out. Do you see anything like that? Use some penetrant first (like PB Blaster) to facilitate it breaking free. The last resort would be to heat the aluminum with a propane torch and expand the hole faster than the pin. It should come out then. But first make sure there isn't some sort of mechanical retainer holding it in place.

Edit: Look at both sides of the pin. If one side is bigger, then that is a head that keeps it from going all the way through. Drive it out from the other side.

I own an H34 with a Kenyon Boom. I drove that pin out with a small hammer and a pin punch. I bought replacement sheaves for a very high price from Rig right. I think you can find some cheaper sheaves that will work. So, things are not as bad as they seem!

I don't see any cross drilled or set screw that could be holding it in place. I'll double check the pin head sizes on both sides and try it again in the morning.

I looked up this Pin on Gig Rite's website. They show it as having a Knurled end. I'll take a closer look and make sure I remove it in the right direction.

Knurled Axle for 3550 Outhaul Ass'y: K-11473-2:
SS knurled Sheave Axle pin is 3/8" diameter x 2 3/4" long.

Thats for the advice. I purchased a few pin pinches which helped do the job. The Sheave Pin Axle slide right out with some penetrating oil. I added some anti seize with the new install for the next guy that needs to remove it. Thanks for the advice.
