My current Honeywell died and I tried to replace it with a standard household device that the Home Depot guy assured me would work...
What are other people using? This is a two wire system with just a furnace and fan.
almost any thermostat should work, as most of them are wired for low voltage, but mostly they only carry a signal, not any actual current (amps).... (although the one I have also uses batteries in it to work as it is programmable)
the simple common thermostat consists of a bi-metal thermal spring that expands or contracts with the temperature, which controls a simple make/break circuit that sends the signal to the furnace/heater or A/C.....to its relay. the relay activates the component itself.
when the circuit is "made" at the thermostat because it needs heat, the relay is activated. once the room temp comes up the the preset limit of the thermostat, the signal from the thermostat "breaks" and the relay is shut off and kills the power to the furnace...
if you are still having problems you maybe should check the relay on the heating unit..
you could also try an rv thermostat to see if it works any better...but i doubt that it will.
