Full Enclosure

I have a 2005 41 DS. Right now we have a dodger, binimi, and side panels for each side back to where the arch starts. I now am looking to enclose the cocpit but the arch is a main area for rain to come in because of the arch traveler opening. I am hoping some other arch traveler boats can send me pictures on how they solved this with an enclosure. Thanks

Rain Gutters and Silicone

Dreamboat is already put to bed for the winter and the full enclosure has been removed so I cannot provide pictures until next spring. I had full enclosure made for our 2011 winter trip to the keys. I reduced drips from the traveler to a to a minimum by two methods.

First, I built up ridges of silicone caulk on the metal top of the traveler to divert water from getting under the bimini parts that are attached to the front and back edges of the traveler plate and arch, to make water flow towards the rain gutters I describe in the next paragraph. Specifically, I figured out where they needed to be, put silicone ridges on the arch and traveler plate and let them dry before putting the canvas on, so they are under but not adhered to the canvas that attaches the front and back sections of the bimini to the arch and traveler plate.

Second, I cut up a white flexible plastic trash can and made basically flat plastic rain gutters that I could silicone in between the two arch tubes. They go from under the edge of where the flat traveler plate ends, between the two tubes of the arch under the roller that the traveler line goes around and through a grommet and down under the bimini to the jam cleat. The gutter pieces come out, outboard of that roller, above the bimini canvas that connects to the arch. I was able to get enough downhill slope that rain water goes down the outside of the bimini and the sides of enclosure.

It was definitely a trial and error job needing several tweaks to get it pretty good. The only real drip I get is from the grommet where the traveler lines come down under the bimini. I know this is hard to picture from a word description. Dreamboat will go back in the water in the second half of April 2015. If you haven't solved your problem by late April 2015, email me and I will take pictures for you.

I think I get it. I was going to take some plastic I used as a camping ground cloth and cut up some pieces to see if a gutter system would work. If it works I may have these gutters built into the canvas so I can zip them in and out.

I did nothing with silicone or plastic and my enclosure is about 95% dry in the heaviest rain. As Mulf says above, I get a few drips around the traveler blocks but nothing forward of there, and nothing aft. It really comes down to finding a first class canvas guy and emphasizing to him what is important to you. For instance, since the side curtains snap to the coamings, it was important to me that they be far enough outboard so that a person's head would not touch when seated. And of course no leaks. On my enclosure he made sunbrella covers for the traveler blocks which shed most of the rain water.

I have a 45CC with a full enclosure. I covered the two larger holes at the top of the arch with canvas pieces, with snaps just large enough to cover the openings. where the traveler lines come down still have a small opening. Even in heaven rains while at the dock very little rain comes in.. I bought two nerf balls that I was going to sick in the holes when it rained but never needed to. The cockpit has all custom cushions. The little rain that comes in,no problem. I love the full cockpit cover. It gives another living space..two seasons in and I would do again.

Thanks this does help

You went out and around the arch I was not sure if the panels should do that or go in front of the arch.

Mine is similar to Gatch 30 and my canvas covers the arch except where the traveler goes across. I used silicone. I still get some water through the stainless and I just watch when it rains and stick more silicone on. I also siliconed around the traveler lines and as it dried, I worked the lines free of the silicone. I was in very heavy rain rthis past weekend and had a few drops. You just have to keep at it until they are all gone. This is our 12th year with the enclosure. The enclosure makes all the difference in comfort. We put it on mid October and take it off mid to late May. After having one, you won't want to sail in the rain in cool weather without it on. Also on a cool sunny day, it acts like a greenhouse.

Any pictures would help. I am talking to a canvas person so pictures would be nice to show him. I already have the first panels from the dodger to the arch
I need shows of the panels around the arch and the back. Thanks

Enclosure Photos on a Hunter 356

This is the enclosure on our H356. We commissioned in 2003 and have now got 12 seasons on this. We put the rear panels on in Mid-October and take off in mid- May. I have cruised in below freezing conditions in the sun and had 50 degrees inside the enclosure just due to,greenhouse effect. It makes a huge difference in comfort levels. Cruising the TennTom to Florida and return last year it was very comfortable going across the Gulf. Also in rougher seas with spray, you stay dry inside and don't have that salt spray get on you. I think it is one of the best investments I made on our boat. Mir adds a month each end of the season on Kentucky Lake.
