Some potentially exciting news...

Hey All:

Since it is cold out and can't work on the boat... I thought I'd engage in winter musings and familial politicking.

So here is my deal. My wife tolerates my sailing fever. I know that makes me a lucky guy..... She really likes relaxing in the cockpit reading a magazine.... and I believe she is sincere about that... and she even seems to like the occasional overnight on the boat.... But she bails on my week long trips. Those are just me and the kids. And my kids are getting older and moving away. I only have one left living at home and she will be gone in three more summers... I had given up on the idea of ever taking a serious cruise with my wife on board... until today.:D

Today my wife was telling me about a story she read about the destruction of the barrier islands south of New Orleans... and how the levee system contributed to that.... and the conversation segued into my mention of Reggiemiah's planned trip down the Mississippi and that lead to my telling her of the "Great Loop" cruises I've read about and then something unexpected happened.... my wife said...

and I'm quoting

"I've always wanted to take a trip down the Mississippi... now if you want to talk to me about spending a summer cruising down the Mississippi, I'm game".

I said "Oh really?!"

And she said,
"Yeah, that sounds fun... I guess the leg to Key West could be your open ocean fantasy so long as I know we aren't actually out in the open ocean and close enough to land that we could go in if things got rough".

WHAT!? Did that really happen? I'm still pinching myself.:snooty:

THANK YOU Reggiemiah for priming that pump!!!

I might end up building that Wharram Tiki after all:dance:

Nice, but get it in writing before you do anything else. ;)

The vast majority of pleasure boats avoid the lower Miss in favor of the Ten Tom waterway. No good places to stop for a long way. We did it from Chi to Mobile and it was excellent. Loved the trip. Then from Mobile you take the gulf ICW along the Fla panhandle to Apalachicola. From there its an easy overnight to Clearwater/St Petes and then day hopping all the way to the keys.
Go for it!
PM if you need to discuss details...

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
You are a lucky man.

I keep on hoping that when my wife gets older she will be more game for sailing trips. I also figure that if I go back to marina hopping and I get an AC system for the boat she might be game. My wife gets migraines and hates the summer heat.

Good luck and I hope that things stay that way!

I hope it all comes true for you. I lived 32 years on the Mississippi and was a dream of mine to cruise down to New Orleans. Always thought I would but time keep flying by......

I hear ya. My Dad used to talk to me all the time about "some day" doing a canoe trip down the mississippi. His dream not mine. I don't want to sleep in a canoe.

you can not force someone to like or accept something, but if you can gently direct them in a direction without them realizing they are being "herded".... it will take the effort out getting them to change their mind.

if you can get someone interested in reading an article or book, if the book or article is interesting in itself, it will capture the imagination of the person reading it....

then the brain-washing is well on its way:D....

To "like" something, no.

To "accept" something, well, that happens all the time. ;)

Mardi Gras.. 41 days before the first sunday after the spring equinox?
But .. it is better to be there the week before .. We usually do not go on Mardi Gras because of the large amount of chaos.. You can watch that part on TV.

Woody, When bringing my boat back from clear Lake, Tx, back in '91 (first trip after purchase), we came out of the Harvy locks and were in the river down to the Industrial Canal. It was a 6 mile trip on the river, passing the French Quarter at about 2 AM.. It ws really a pretty sight, but the trip was a bit tense as we avoided all the big commercial traffic on the river.. Fun, but we really had to watch what was going on and communicate with thee traffic control guys.

Claude there is no place like No during Mardi Gras the out side world does not exist ...i have some doubloons that were not throw in any parade they were from Pete Fountains half fast walkers that was the year that the Russians shot down the JAL...and Pete was going to march as the Cossack s and when that happened he re minted the doubloons as the Gauchos and through them instead a friend of mine ( he owned O Riley's bar on Canal street) and he were friends and he saw how much fun i was having and got them for me as a gift still got them ...hummmm wonder if the collectors value them lol
