hunter 270 Adelaide
Hi. I have a Hunter 270 and would like to change my winches to self tailing. However when I looked at how the existing winches are attached I found that it has no backplate. If I increase the size of the winches from lewmar 6 to a self tailing winch do I need to instal backing plates. Can anyone please advise. Also I am in Australia and it is difficult to find hunter parts so will probably just buy whatever I can find here in Adelaide. Thanks. John

For any winch on any boat large fender washers will be fine. No true backing plate needed. The the load on a winch is in shear, so there is very little lifting (tension) pressure on the winch pulling on the bolts or plates.

I installed ST Andersen winches on my H260 (same boat as yours but water ballast). There is an aluminum plate glassed into the deck where the winch is installed, should be no problem upgrading your winches. I have a photo album in my profile of some H260 mods I did on my boat, might give you some ideas.

Good luck, Bob

Bob I see you are on line. Another question. Like your photo of your winch. Do you have more photos to share. I am pretty new at sailing and especially modifications and maintenance. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
