It seems that the wire cable on my Daysailor II comes off the pulley on the centerboard trunk and jams either the up or down motion. If I keep tension while doing either motion it works. Can someone suggest or show a fix to keep this cable on the pully which I can not seem to get to easily.

I have observed similar in a friend's Daysailer 2. The cable comes out of the trunk, and the pulley mounted doesn't do a damn thing, so the wire just cuts into the glass. We looked at it, and I cogitated on it, and I think the solution is to check over on the Daysailer Association website… Unless someone like Sunbird has a good solution, and he sure knows a lot!

You don't have to be a member of the DS Assoc. to use the forum, just register. The search function will list several topics concerning this problem (and fixes). My DSII has had CB jams a couple times, but from something getting in the trunk rather than the cables fouling. Our DS2s did not get the nice lever system of the DS1s.

Is your DS II a 1971-73 model? Id this the up-cable or the down-cable? I have heard of problems on these boats where the cable that pulls the CB down slips down between hte CB and the inside of the trunk, one cure is to add a piece of Stainless-steel (or bronze) sail track to the forward edge (top edge when CB is down) of hte Cb for the cable to rest in. I wonder if the block that the cable keeps slipping off is a replacement, since hte original would seem to have no room for the cable to slip off of the sheave.

It jams using either the up or down cable after 3 or 4 times without tension kept on them.
My down board cable to the centerboard is a hole in the cuddy cabin not thru the centerboard trunk as shown in your illustration. Perhaps the pully is a replacement. The cotton line seems rather newish. I have only owned the boat for 2 years and only sailed it about 5 times since the centerboard jams and I need to put it onto its side to pull out the board and slip the cable back onto the pully w/ a tool.

OK, well maybe your boat is a newer model? CB setup was changed in 1974 to move the down line to the top of the forward end of the CB trunk and the cable was replaced by line. The setup was again changed in the 1977 models (oct 1976) to add a block (pulley) at the top of the cuddy opening for the down line to run through. See below pics/diagrams. On these newer boats I don't think the sail track is needed since the rope is too large to slip between the CB and trunk side. OH and in around 1975 O'DAY added a short length of shock cord (bungee cord) to the setup to keep some tension on the up cable to prevent it from getting stuck.
One of these 2 setups should match your boat. However, there is no block (pulley) used inside the CB trunk on thse boats, or even where the line comes out of the CB trunk (factory setup). So the block may have been added by a previous owner.
HOWEVER, it is POSSIBLE that your boat IS factory stock, but was built after the CB down line was moved forward, but before the switch to rope instead of cable. I found out about the 1974-76 version from a fellow DS II owner who told me that his CB rigging did not match my drawings (Rudy at D&R didn't even know about that one!) O'DAY tended to "phase in" changes, so your boat may not match my drawings even if "Factory original".
If it doesn't match your boat, could you please send pictures? I want to add it to my Expanded Manual (and let Rudy at D&R know too!) THANKS!

The Day Sailer II needs to have constant tension on the CB cables to avoid them slipping between the CB and the side of the trunk. All later-model DS II's have a length of shock cord on the uphaul that keeps the slack out of that cable when the board is down. I agree with Sunbird that there is something amiss with your downhaul cable, as it rarely jams. The original through-deck fitting would hold the cable on the pulley, and the cable is always being lifted away from the board.
I'll make another guess--I suspect that the tang (the metal strap that fastens the cable to the board) has become twisted, so the cable is no longer centered in the trunk. On the older DS II's the two cables (uphaul/downhaul) cross inside the trunk, with minimal clearance. One tang is mounted slightly to starboard, the other slightly to port. Any bending of the straps might cause a foul. The definitive cure is to drop the board, find out what's going on, and fix it.
For what it's worth, I think the older system is better than the rope/block&tackle system that replaced it, so I think it's worth fixing. Check out the daysailer.org association forum for exhaustive discussion of CB issues on all versions of the DS.
