My Boat's 15 Minutes of Fame, news at 11.

Two years ago this happened.

Down here in the Tampa Bay area, a bizarre couple whose children the court had taken away, tied up the grandmother with zip-ties, took their two children & dog & sailed their rundown boat to Cuba seeking asylum. The boat they used in in the foreground. 300 miles in 3 days, not bad.

This was locally big news when it first broke. As I read the newspaper that morning, the picture on the front page showing their boat made me look twice.

Right there in the picture was MY boat. Tis nice to feel famous, if only for a day. Anyhow I thought I would post the picture along with an arrow pointing to my boat. That nite on the 6 & 11 o'clock news, there she was shown again. Over the course of time, the same pic would show up in the news.

The article if you wish to read about one Bizzaro couple:

Anyone else have their boat pictured making the headlines along with fleeting fame?

Nope.
I think the use of that image was just to provide some window dressing for a larger story.
Filler, if you will, to express the fact that a sailboat was used to facilitate what some considered a crime.

And you can probably look forward to seeing your boat's image in future, unrelated news, whenever they need stock imagery of a docked sailboat for a sailing-related story, however tenuous the connection. ;)

It's how we do "news".

Just,

A friend of mine brought this up last nite In discussion & thought I should share this.

The window dressing is that he is NO longer a threat. No one died or was injured. That's the good news. I was only referring to having your boat pictured as part of the news.

Minute 49 of the final Americas Cup video, after the race, ORACLE was sailing back under the Bay Bridge. Right past me! And they never leaned over to hand me a bottle of champagne!

Stu,

Oh, those Bastards, it must be a different kind of membership & you're just not a card-carrying member. At least we don't have to put up with Dennis Conner's' stupidity anymore as, he wasn't there to LOSE. I did watch all of the races. If I remember, Oracle was down a couple races before storming back.

Ah, so it's all about you. Sorry. :D

Unfortunately my boat wasn't pictured when, from her cockpit, I witnessed the Mexican military rain down full-auto .50 caliber bullets onto a public thoroughfare in Puerto Penasco.

Darn it!

Just,

Too funny man, I only wanted my boat's name on the Hollywood walk of fame outside of Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

What's with the 50 caliber & the Mexican military? That might make a good thread. I wonder how many other boaters have had these scary situations?

I once had the USCG firing shells from a couple miles away, hitting close to my boat. That was scary, as I was flying the colors.

During the coverage of hurricane Katrina the Destroyer shown over and over on TV news coverage is my old ship. It is the original USS Kidd DD661 permanently tied to the pier at Baton Rouge La. and currently a museum ship. It survived with no damage.

Chief,

Now that's a story.........thanks for sharing.

I was involved in process plant repairs shortly after Katrina, "Nahlins" was devastated.
That was REALLY sad to see firsthand. I was also in Homestead Florida after Andrew, that was just as sad.

Flying colors does not a radar signature make!

This happened on my last day there while slipped in a marina, so you can skip all the exposition and go straight to the climax.

Maybe this is why I haven't put Sovereign's name on her transom?

Stu,
Of course they are going to "casually ignore" the better looking boat.

Cap'n Ron: Since you appreciated the Katrina/Kidd story. I though I would also let you know that the new USS Kidd DDG 100 was still being built during Katrina and was still on the hard. She sustained 1 mil damage and hadn't even been launched yet! (610' destroyer) I was invited and attended DDG100's commissioning in Galveston in 2007. Later, Chief

My wife's sister's son's wife's father's boat was "filmed" and showed up on the "images of New York" video sailing down the East River.

Cool CaptnRon!
The boat they made their speedy escape on is a Morgan 25. Slightly modified Morgan 24 by Catalina after buying the company.
No problem making a passage like this on these boats but I wouldn't want to do it with 3 more people onboard, no matter how short they are!

Jack,

Now that's what I'm talkin' about man!

Good looking boat. Spirited conditions, reefed main, partially furled headsail, sittin' high-side, comfortable heel...............this is why we sail.

Now that's a "cover' pic. I'll bet you framed this didn't you, I would have. Your pal in the lead boat snapped a fine look.

Ron,

Yea it's on the wall... But not the cover, just the image. Buddy who snapped it was not on a lead boat, would be hard as we were over 9 knots. He crossed our bow and took it. And then this one before re rocketed away.
