Hello,

Hauled out today and noticed a chip out of the putty used to fill in and smooth the lead keel where it meets the fiberglass mating surface on my 1979 Hunter 30. Does anyone know what the filler material was that Hunter used in the late 70's and also any recommendations on what to fill it in with? Is this a job for a Marinetex type epoxy?

Regards,
Bob

You may want to look up "fairing compound" on the internet. There are many products that will do the job.

Ditto what Steve said. I'll add: I've done it and no special product. Off the shelf will do if no chipping/damage to the FG stub. Might want to check stub with a moisture meter for water intrusion.

I suggest cleaning out the crack and making sure it is bone dry. Flush with acetone then fill with a mixture of polyester resin and cabosil. Or you could use a vinyl ester mix such as 3M Premium.

I faired mine with epoxy 35 years ago and it is still perfect.
