I am looking for ideas on how to install an electric windlass on a 1999 Beneteau 321. A picture of the windlass placement and any problems encountered would be appreciated.

I installed a lewmar 550 on a 285. I set it behind the anchor locker. I open the anchor locker and it pretty much feeds it in to the locker. Sometimes i have to guide it, but not often. I carry 250 of 1/2 rode with 25 chain. I will send a pic when i get back to the boat. I also made a 10' long remote that I store in the shelf on the V berth. I pass the remote up thru the hatch and can comfortably work the winch from the foredeck.
I have a 321 as well, but it is currently windlass-less. I did take a photo of this windlass that I saw on another 321. I think it's a manual, but maybe it will give you some mounting ideas. I also read that the Lewmar anchorman manual was standard issue from the factory. Keep us posted when you figure out what you decide.

We bought a '98 321 last fall and are also planning to install a windlass. I have been collecting pictures for my husband to help us. We also found an article from "Good Old Boat" with instructions for installing them. Hope this helps.

Okay. It looks like everyone uses the shelf and then pushes the chain/rope pile down as it piles up. The vertical distance from windlass to chain pile is less than the 12 inches suggested in installation manuals for a Lewmar V700. I am considering building a shelf farther forward at deck level and then cutting out a section of the hatch cover. Thanks for your input and if I make a decision I will post it.
