New Mack Pack?

Any sailors out there with a bolt rope mail sail install a Mack Pack recently?

My new-to-me O'Day 322 does not have any lazy jacks, and it think I want to do a Mack Pack. But I did not want to have to cut slits in the main to accommodate the straps that hold the cover in place. I asked them if they could change the straps for twist locks that I would mount on the boom. They said you no longer have to cut slits in the main, that they use a new strap that fits under the bolt rope. I am having a hard envisioning how you can get a strap in the groove, under the sail.

Curious if anyone has a Mack Pack set up this way, and how hard it is to install it every season.

have the mack pack made in a way that it secures under the boom and mount it on sail slides in the bottom track on the bottom of the boom

. Interesting idea, but I have lots of stuff hanging under the boom...main sheet, vang, and some strap eyes. Not sure if moving all that is the way to go. But I will look at it.

Try a sail pack, same idea, it mount on either side of the boom, inside a round strip that is added to the side of the boom. It also has a fiberglass rod holding the top of the pack up. Mine was done by permapack in quebec.

Ruth and I made one based somewhat on Sailrite's plans...

... but modified it in a number of ways...

The most recent way I've seen to fix a stack pack to the boom with a bolt rope main, has a long, thin piece of Dacron stitched all along the bottom of the stack pack, separating the two halves. It's wide enough to fold around the bolt rope plus a little extra. This Dacron is folded around the bolt rope as it's fed along the boom and the sail and stack pack slide in together. There's enough slack between bolt rope and boom slot to accept this thin piece of Dacron.
Very simple; doesn't mess with other boom fittings; works flawlessly.

Thanks Sam. I think the Mack Pack uses a Dacron strap between the halves of the cover, that goes around the bolt rope as you outlined. Maybe that is the best solution.
