davit arch for bigger hunters

I just did a dry fit test of this arch that I started, I was getting worried about the fit from the heat of the welding........all went well and it sits well and it fits without a fight.

I started to build this arch last winter and then summer came and I became busy with boating etc.....last fall I made a sample arch out of plastic electrical conduit and then I had the 316L bent up at a railing company....along with all the material and the pullys and cost of bending I dont think I have 1500$ into it........

I had some experience with tig welding in a previous carrer , so I bought a suitcase tig welder it does 220v or 120v for 600$ (new) and I have gone through 2 small bottles of argon 54$ each along with some other welding supplies another 100$

I use a coping program from the internet (free) to figure out the shape for how i cut the pipe where it intersects the other...(very cool and easy)....I print it off, cut the paper and then wrap it around the pipe and mark i with a marker and the I cut the shape with a grinder

I will now take the arch off and make a few additions and the polish....it will be ready for next spring....its working out well, and I am getting what I want

Very nice work me i just bought a davits with ssolar pannel i am up north with it and the boat is in florida just hope i can make it fit my hunter 38 very nice ass but tricky to fit a davits

Looks very nice. Just out of curiosity, what do you think the capacity of the arch in weight for a dinghy/outboard?

Capacity...... It will be able to hold solar panels, future wind vane if needed, 11 foot rib with 15 horse 2 stroke ... Along with other items such as buoys, lines etc....

Now there are no guarantees here, if I forget to pull the drain on the dinghy and we have a down pour...I am sure it will all come down ..lol...in heavy weather, one would put the dinghy on deck, before going out...when we talk capacity there are so many variables.

Next year when I put it on permanently I will take a picture with the dinghy in the air and two fat guys sitting on top.... If it passes we will then go sailing.. Lol
There is alot of trail and error in this process .

Hi, ….nice work, you did great job on that boat. I like your arch, but I am a little skeptical about cross strengthens. I suggest to test it know when is mounted, hang 200 lb on it and swing it from side to side like when boat is on mooring ball and rolling from side to side to see how stiff is your structure..other than that it looks OK.

Yes..... From side to side it will be attached to the railing on each side to help with the swing.... From there... I will have to re think and hopefully get some advise on this forum

Nice job on the arch ! I think the force to plan for is if the boat is heeled over and the stern drops off a big wave. The arch has to take that diagonal shock load.
It is important that the dinghy can not move a mm in the davits. Any movement will increase the load on the arch and quickly wear a hole in the dink.
We keep our drain open.
The two davit tackles attach to the dinghy floor so the tubes contact the davits first, then we use two compression straps to completely immobilize the dinghy against the davits and remove any movement what so ever.
The davits were set up so the tips where the tackles attach are closer together than the dinghy lift points, the tackles come down on a bit of an angle to each end of the dinghy.
