Warning buzzer question

Hello fellow sailors,
I had an issue with my fuel system this past weekend. I sail a 1976 Pearson 365 with a Westerbeke 40 diesel. I resolved the no-start problem with a new primary fuel filter. While replacing the fuel filter and priming the system with the lift pump, the warning buzzer was sounding off even with the ignition key turned off. Seemed as though the buzzer alarm was somehow sensing fuel pressure. With the new filter in place, purged of air and running fine, the buzzer alarm is again working as it should. I guess my question is; Does the low oil pressure alarm have anything to do with the fuel system? And, why would it sound-off with the key turned off? Buzzer never sounded off when I replaced the filter in the past.

With the engine not running, there is no oil pressure. Thus, if the sensor is somehow activated it will sound. No relation to the fuel system. Sounding with the key off sounds like a possible short. That's my take.

Sounds like you may have disturbed the sensor's wiring or the wiring harness and there is a wire which may have lost its insulation and created a short. It is not unusual for the wiring harness between the engine and control panel to become chaffed as it is routed around sharp fiberglass corners. With hull flexing it can happen over time. Usually a visual inspection of the harness will show where the insulation may be damaged.

Thanks Benny,
Sounds logical as the the area I was working in was in close proximity to the alarm buzzer. Will have to take a closer look next time I'm at the boat.
