Probably was checking out the babes on the beach through his binok's and not paying attention to how close he was.

Night-time; probably asleep & heading for Marina del Rey! Better than hitting the breakwater at the entrance to the marina!

Years of experience have taught me 3 things:

1. Never go out on the first 2 daze of Memorial weekend.
2. Never go out on the night of Fourth of July.
3. Never go out on the first 2 daze of Labor Day weekend.

On #1 & 3, on the third day,the drunks are now at home nursing hangovers & boat traffic is light. I did however, watch the video & thought the girls were cute. This alone might cause me to go aground on those other weekends though.

I'm abit let down on this thread.

Jon started with a link for a shithead drunk boater that ran aground. I chimed in with my thoughts pertaining to this.

And then, it turned into who was the hot reporter, WHAT WAS HER NAME ETC. What happened to the original topic, when did we go off? Sometimes threads go off on tangents & dwell on a whole different thought pattern then what the original questioner had posted. I just don't understand this thinking.

Maybe it's just me, but I had hoped this was about the dangers of drinking & grounding, especially on holidays. Maybe this should be better suited in the, "OFF TOPIC" forum, at least the original thought would carry thru.

OH WELL....................

It would probably go better if we knew what actually occurred. It may be that drinking had nothing directly to do with the accident, even if the guy was > 0.08%. People have run aground before w/o being drunk; just asleep, for example. Of course-- the news media wants to play it up b/c it has deluded itself into thinking it's committing an act of public service by raising awareness of something that rarely [if ever] occurs [in this case, a possible sailboat grounding from drunkenness].

the media is in business to sell things like deodorant and laxitives and uninformed sensationalism gets attention. for example, take 'small plane engine faiure.' almost always this means empty tanks or fuel mismanagement by the pilot, but 'engine failure' sounds much sexier. ask yourself how often your far less expensive and much less stricly maintained automobile engine than any airplane engine has 'failed'' while cruising.

Guys,

It's not the particulars, but their effects. I have dumb stupid people that die all year long in, "MY GULF". That's right, it's my water for boating, if you want to die, you need my permission first. If not, you're on your own, I'll see you on the 11:00 PM News.

If you looked at other threads where I had posted of needless loss of life, you may have a different take on this. In the past fifteen years, I have saved 10 to 15 people from dying. People both close in & offshore. All have never made the news, as it became a non-issue. Why you may ask?

I had other plans that day, I didn't think about being a savior however, fate being a fickle *****, my day was interrupted yet, people did not die.

So I ask you all, a drunk sailor with passengers onboard, he is TOTALLY responsible, No one else. But, what disappointed me most on this thread, was the attention was directed to who the HOT babe was.

REALLY?..............................Where have we gone, what did we learn in this thread?

I don't mean to sound degrading but, as with our compass and GPS, can we please stay the course?

We had another grounded sailboat last year right where I live in Sunset Beach. In that particular case, it was someone who came in late at night and may have anchored but went to sleep and woke up to a boat stuck in the sand.
I'm not sure everyone pays attention to the tides all time, maybe complacent about looking at the depth every once in a while? It's California, we don't typically worry about it. I'm always nervous around shallow waters. With 3-5 foot swells and waves you can get caught up fast.
I had a CAL20 in a shallow harbor dock for years that would be stuck whenever it was low tide, so I got very good at keeping track of when I could and couldn't leave or come back to the dock. I am loaded with tide apps.

Then again, he WAS from Marina Del Ray I believe, and we have a stereotype for boaters from Marina Del Ray...nuff said. :)
