We sailed down the west coast so did not launch there.
BUT, after our years there, if I was time limited and wanted to get the best cruising, I would trail down the Baha and launch in Puerto Escondico. VERY nice facilities and less than an hour from GREAT anchorages!!!! MANY OF THEM, from Islands to Baja side small towns. Down side is it's an extra day or 2 of towing.
If I had more time, I would trail down the mainland side of the Sea of Cortez and launch in Guaymas or San Carlos (both withing about 5 miles from each other. It's less than a full day of towing from the Phoenix area to Guaymas. Me, I would do Guaymas Marina Seca. Lower cost, nice storage and friendly owner! And closer to a Mexican town, not all gringos.
If you launch on this side, it's an over night sail to the Baja side. We think that the Baja side is THE BEST! Much better anchorage and weather on that side! More anchorages closer together and the fishing snorkeling is out of the world during most of the year.
BOTH sides have travel lifts, and boat ramps.

At some point it would be nice to use the trailer to get the boat to a different area and launch the boat. I tend to stick to the Chesapeake Bay and I have a lot of places that I still want to visit. A really nice trip would be to launch out of Solomons Island and sail over to the Choptank River. There is Oxford, Cambridge, and you can back door St. Michaels. On the way back there is also the Little Choptank River. All of these also put Smith Island as a possible destination.
Another fun idea would be to launch out of Deltaville. You could go over to Onancock, Tangier Island, Chrisfield, and then come back.
Anyway, the big issue that I see is trying to find a place to launch and then leave the truck and trailer. If you find a place where you can leave it, is it safe or will your vehicle or trailer be vandalized or have stuff taken from it?
How do you make arrangements to do trips like these? Any good advise on finding safe places to do things like this?

It's easy, or has been for us. Understand that we do not put our trailer in salt water, and we normally go for months at a time, so we use a yard. In all cases we contacted the yard, they were happy to allow us to store our truck & trailer in there dry storage area, at least for a short time and for a small fee.
When going longer, just look for an RV Storage yard close to your launch and/or recovery area. In most cases it's a very low cost.
We are in the planning stages of our next trip now. We will launch in one area, then we will rent a car and Jill will follow me (in the truck empty trailer) to an RV yard close to our haul out area. We then drive back to the boat and head out knowing all is well.

Thanks for info Greg. Carole and I would like to do the Sea of Cortez. We have been to San Carlos area numerous times years ago so that sounds like a launch option for us. I have online checked Rocky Point but not very viable for a boat that needs 6' to launch, I think. I am on the water in port, at Bodega Bay right now with about a 20mph wind, so rocking about a bit.
