New to Forum

Greetings to all,. My name is Pete and I am new to the forum. My wife and I recently acquired a 92 Hunter 23. The boat is in great shape but we are going over it stem to stern to make sure we are well acquainted with the boat before we get it wet. I also want to make sure my wife and I can setup her up in a reasonable amount of time and hope to be proficient before we get it to a ramp as this is not that way I want to become a you tube sensation. I have been lurking in the background checking out the posts and trying to absorb as much as I can. Thank you to all.

Today I took a motorcycle ride to check out a sailing club about an hour from our house. The club was deserted but looked like a great place to launch from and had nice facilities. I called the number posted for information and ended up speaking a very nice man who used to own a Hunter 23 but now owns a Hunter 260. After talking with gentleman for a few minutes, and after having spent hours reading the forum posts I just point plank asked this nice guy I was talking to if he posted to this site under the moniker of Kermit and as a matter of fact that was exactly who I was talking to. Kermit was wonderful to talk to a gave me some very good pointers about my boat and about the sailing club I visited. This forum has been a great help so and I look forward to contributing.

Welcome to the forum . It is a wonderful source of information . We owned a h23 for 15 years and miss it . I am sure you will enjoy it as much as we did ours . One rule . NO yelling, even at the ramp when things go wrong as they will . Not unlike in the world of motorcycling and dropping them . Not a question of if but when .

sailing clubs are a great place to start. they all serve drinks and actually (mostly) know how to sail.

Thank you for all the kind words. I am just looking forward to getting back on the water. I lived in New England for a number of years and enjoyed sailing on a number of different boats with a bunch of different characters and have heard many a tale over both good and occasionally cheap scotch. I did some time in the Coast Guard so I have first hand experience of the results when things go wrong. Always learning and always listening. Tomorrow I am meeting with a former sailing instructor for some familiarization with the area lakes. Hopefully we will be able to launch in the spring. Not that the boat or trailer need a lot of work but Gilligan and the Skipper (still haven't figured out who is who) want to make sure we are ready. After all the Coast Guard in its infinite wisdom made me jump through some hoops before they gave me the keys to the 41 footer. Again, thanks for all the encouragement.

where is Lynchburg, SC? Is it far from Raleigh

Welcome. My wife and I got our 260 earlier this year. Setup is a bear the first time or two but now we're 30-45 minutes to the water when we get out of the truck at the marina. It's been a blast and we can't wait to take it down to the gulf coast in the next few weeks.

It takes me a few hrs when I launch my 23 each season - I don't try to trailer sail it. That mast is not light and it is long - it can be tough to hold it after you slide it back and are pinning the foot to the mast plate. I use 3 people (2 plus me); I fashioned a sort of baby stay (or bridle) setup to help support the mast as it goes up or down.

That said, it is not a really complex boat - I call it a glorified day sailer. It has been fun and is reasonably forgiving - if you use even a bit of common sense you aren't going to do too much damage while sailing, and I can't imagine you could capsize it (though it isn't hard to put the toerail under if you try).

Crazy Dave, Lynchburg is about 20 miles south of Florence. It looks like we are about 175 miles from Raleigh.

Sounds like a trip and maybe I can find a frog to come with me when you put the boat in the water next sping. However, look up the beginning of the James River in VA which by then I will be living near there. Kermit might have to be hijacked into coming as well.
