Hunter 280 motor options

Hi I am looking at purchasing a 96 Hunter 280, She was used as a demo boat in Sydney. She has got a Yanmar 18hp with a sail drive. This is apparently the original motor. I thought these only came with a shaft drive. Any info would be appreciated. Any other info on inherit problems I should look out for?? Regards

I have a '96 H280, and have no issues with it. I have the 2GM20F engine, but with a shaft drive. I did not think Hunter offered a sail drive on this boat. May not be OEM.

Mine has the 5' draft fin keel. Handles really well. Cabin is very "open", but lacks privacy if you have crew on an over nighter. I have an Aspyn on mine which is nice since the B&R rig does not allow for dead down wind sailing. But the rig is strong, and have no issues with it.

We have a 1996 280 as well w/ the 18hp shaft drive. It is possible that Asian/Australian models had the sail drive as an option but . . . . ???
I don't think the 280 has any special issues. The rig is such that anything larger than a 110 is not practical and sailing DDW is problematic but an asymm does make up for that really well. Best of Luck!!

Hi: I just buy a 1996 H 280, Yanmar 2GM20F, it need TLC , I need to install a new Stop Cable, but my boat have not the old one installed is this one the right one ( 104271-67550 Yanmar Stop Cable) is 9.8 feet long I'm not sure if is going to be long enough.

It could very well be long enough. As I recall, the cable runs pretty directly from the engine to the fitting under the helm seat. The dimension from the engine cover to the rear bulkhead is 58" (~5') so that should help with your decision.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies i have purchased the Hunter 280. The broker actually sent me the pics of the wrong boat it does have a shaft. Anyway had a good 50 mile delivery from Sydney to Lake Macquarie. Happy with the boat. Need to install a 12v USB outlet Andre stereo but otherwise very happy.
