I'd like to change my H34 propeller from 2 to 3 blades. Any suggestions re: diameter and pitch. I'm hoping to improve maneuverability while docking, also I have trouble getting the bow around in an contrary wind. What do you think??

My suggestion for props is to ALWAYS let the prop dealer size it for you. When it is the wrong pitch/diameter it is their issue.

The next thing you need to consider is your budget. Fixed, feathering or folding. Just get your wallet out and make your decision.

Thanks Steve, I have a propeller group working on it but I'm concerned they may recommend a prop they have in stock--not necessarily the best design for my boat.

Prop size has everything to do with engine HP, type, and hull displacement. Hunter used to use a prop distributor in FL to size their props. I do not know if Marlow has continued that arrangement. Suggest you email Eddie Breeden at Marlow Hunter Service and ask him for the contact info.

Executive summary - you want the largest prop that will fit (diameter). The pitch is determined by the max number of turns your engine/transmision will generate so that you reach hull speed at max rev allowing for a ~50% slipage (i.e. 12" pitch will push you 6").

It's an amazingly complex subject. Like others have said the prop shop should be able to tell you what's right.

This is the book if you want to know about sizing a prop for a boat.

On our 84/34 I have a 16" feathering prop.2 blade.I can back up or turn around in nearly the length of the boat. The reverse is spectacular.Full control in tight situations. The more you use it.The more confident you become when situations arise. I know you wanted a 3 blade. But this works very well on this particular boat.

Thanks to all. I have a propeller professional on the job. Looks like ~$650 for a new 3 blade bronze prop. I don't know the specs yet.
