New O'day 22 owner

Hi all,

Thought I would introduce myself before I pile on with questions. My name is Chris and I ex-Navy where I learned to sail while stationed in Annapolis, MD. Currently in the Milwaukee area.

Just purchased a 1973 O'day 22 in almost sailable condition. It is pretty dirty (filthy by my standards) but otherwise only needs a few things fixed before I put her on Lake Michigan. Of course, one of those things is an outboard motor - otherwise I have a good mast, jib and even a roller furling jib (of dubious condition.) I have the VHF Radio, compass, depthfinder and fairly decent electrical panel.

I paid not much for the boat and trailer - so some money for a used good condition motor and some sweat equity in a serious scrubbing, polishing and waxing and I will be on the water.

Should mention that I plan to sail with my wife and my three young daughters.

Been reading a lot on this forum and there is some great info and great people on here.

Mine was pretty rough when I got her. She had been parked under some trees and the cats had been camping inside. Lots of elbow grease and some pine-sol fixed her up.

For cleaning, get out your pressure washer and wash it. Just pull back a bit before pointing the 3000 lb spray at the teak! Then, sand the deck and hull with each 600, 1200, and 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper. At that point, you are ready to compound, polish, and wax. Or... You can use my favorite! Skip the compound, polish, and wax, and use acrylic! She will look sooooo shiny when you are done.

Enjoy your boat! Making her a proud vessel will make you proud, and it will have you familiar with every inch of her which will give you confidence that she will take good care of you and your family on the water.

Since you will inevitably need some parts, see this sight, Sailboat Owners, and see DR Marine. Many parts are generic, but... Some are not.

That is a nice pretzel! You will need to lay that out in a warm place, maybe weighted, for a few days. You might even need to turn it a few times to get it straight again. The luff extrusion will hold its curved shape and be unusable til you straighten it.

Milwaukee an excellent place to sail

I had an O'Day 222 for 11 years and the last couple, I kept it on a mooring on Lake Michigan. I've since upgraded to an O'Day 25 but that 22 footer was perfect for daysailing and also trailering around. Green Bay and the Door County area are excellent destinations. The 22 is also good for harbor hopping if you get a bit more adventurous. Port Washington is 25 miles north and Racine is 20 miles south.

The beauty of the Milwaukee harbor is that you can sail outside the breakwall if wind/waves are manageable, but if it's a little dicey outside, you can always stay inside and you're on the equivalent of a 3 mile lake.
Take a good look at the charts as there are some shoal areas north of McKinley and south of South Shore, but in general the depths are good.

Concerning the pretzel, I had the CDI FF2 on the 222 and would make a horseshoe out of it in the winter for storage. I used the entire width of the garage and hung it from the rafters, so it was not nearly so tight. It's pretty pliable but I would definitely take Andrew's advice and lay it out in the sun. Those things are rugged so the chances of damage are pretty remote but just to be sure, I would take the sail off and check the foil to make sure it isn't compromised in some way. I would be very surprised if there was any problem.

Enjoy the boat. You won't regret the O'Day. It's a sturdy boat ideal for Lake Michigan.

The 22 is a great boat. Mine has a 6hp outboard. It seems adequate in power. Just to give you an idea of needed hp.

Just a quick update. I found time to do a quick wash of some of the boat - was happy how easily the mildew came off and how much better it looked just from mildew removal - still have tape residue to remove from the hull.

I picked up a used 6hp merc with tank yesterday. It is a short shaft but my motor mount pivots down and looks like I will be ok for at least this season. May swap it out for next season.

If anyone no a good place for supplies in the Milwaukee area that would be great. Stuff like shackles, Clovis pins, etc. I prefer to not go to West Marine if there is a local option.

Congrats on the 22 and welcome to the forum.
If you know what you need West Marine is not that bad of a store. For the stuff you mentioned sometimes it is best to look at it in person and if there are no other options WM is ok.
D & R Marine was mentioned. they are great to deal with and have a great knowledge of O'days, having worked in the O'day factory.
This site's store is also great to work with if you don't mind mail order.

It's amazing how an old moldy filthy boat can be cleaned up pretty well isn't it.

Are you going to trailer sail it or keep it in the water? The mooring situation in Milwaukee is about as good as it gets. Once you buy a mooring (typically $700 - $1000), you own it and there are no annual fees. I see a few of them for sale each year. You have to maintain it but it's a very inexpensive way to keep a boat on the lake. You transfer title with the harbor master for a small fee and you have to pull it at the end of the season and put a mooring post out, and then reverse that in the spring. I think it's best deal going. I keep mine on a mooring in the south mooring field and belong to South Shore Yacht Club (a great club if you're interested and also reasonable in terms of expense) and keep my dinghy there. You could also do the slip option or keep it on the trailer in dry-storage at McKinley. There are a lot of great options here.

Also, if you like the 3rd of July fireworks at the lakefront, get a transient slip for the night of the 3rd. You have to reserve it right after the first of the year because it's their busiest day, but it is a great way to do the fireworks. We always make a day of it, sailing and hanging out at the boat all day. Then we don't have to deal with driving home after the fireworks. You just stay on the boat and leave the next day.

Initial plan was to trailer it - I live only a few miles from Bender Park. I think a slip or mooring will be in the future - it will make sailing easier. Luckily I can store it for free now.

Pics will come later - as soon as I have some good "after" pictures to go with my before ones.

As an update - the rolling furler is still curved quite a bit - hopefully it will straighten out soon. Need to get the sail off of it - might speed up the process.

I put mine in the yard with 3 cinder blocks to use as a bending jig. I brought it toward straight over several days. Then I took it past straight for several days. One cinder block at each end and one in the middle. Don't put the cinder blocks ON the luff, just bend the luff between the blocks.
