Hi all,

Does anyone have a good way of disposing old gasoline. I have a boat on the market and was quoted $7 per gallon plus labor.

Our county has a recycling center with a container for old gasoline. Call your county public works department and ask if they have something similar. It's free in Sumter County, SC.

Local fire departments like to use it for their training sessions. Call them and see what they say.

Some of the dumps also can use it in their equipment.

I put old outboard gas in the car a gallon at a time. No problem even with mixed gas. I wait until my tanks is about a gallon low then add it. Car holds 17 gallons when full.

Didn't I just see huge wildfires in your part of Calif? Since its a long drive to Sumpter, I will ask at the local dump. This of course is from a 17 gallon tank.

Next rainy day put it in a small metal wash tub, Tractor Supply 5 bucks. Place in the middle of your driveway, toss a match in & burn it off.

I often will purchase a few gallons of aviation gas to brighten up old gas. We've never had a problem with it messing up the filters or motor with the "brightened" gas.

I hope that was said in jest.

Any fire department following safe practices during live fire training won't or shouldn't take it.

Gas powered lawn equipment, cars or trucks are the best bet. I save my left over gas for my power generator.

If we don't have a fire or two every month everyone wonders what is happening. Between Nv. and Ca. we always have a couple of them burning.

One of these days we will get back to proper forestry management, but that is for another discussion.

Like someone else mentioned you can always mix it into your own tank a little at a time.

Are you trying to clean the tank or just removing most of it?

Yes, retired and trying to stay out of the news. 17 gallons of gas burning in a driveway would cause a little concern. I think the heat would cure my need to sealcoat the driveway. Anyhow, Misfits I'll put your suggestion on the bottom of the list. :naughty:

The gas is approaching 3 years old. Even with adding a stabilizer when I pumped it in, I wonder what the quality of fuel is remaining. The brightening with aviation is a possibility.

I hauled the boat to a marina and have it for sale. If there come a time when someone wants a sea trial, I'll pump most or all of it out.

I use old gas in my lawnmower, it works great. I am sure you could give it away to other homeowners or to landscapers that mow lawns. No need to pay to dispose of it.

I use Sailm8's method. I add two gals to nearly full pick-up tank (30+ gal capacity) and use it up.

Once I did get a little water in the tank and the pick-up ran rough. A quart of alcohol cleared it up.

If I lived in the area I'd take it off your hands.... no charge. My 2 stoke Tohatsu likes any kind of gas.

But it would be "controlled" burn. :D
You didn't mention you had 17 gallons. Hmm, just don't torch it all at once.

Ward H, wasn't said in jest. I do it every year to get rid of the left over gas from the 14' boat.
I don't see much difference between this & the propane companies that burn off excess fuel from their tanks, but that's me...

The inside scoop (I'm in the industry, just not in NE).

Old gas is regulated by the EPA as an off-specification commercial product, and as such is exempt from hazardous waste regulation if used as a fuel (does not have to be motor fuel) or reprocessed into a fuel. Thus, the most common recycling method is to filter and then dilute it into a much larger volume of gasoline. There are brokers that specialize in this. They also blend trans mix (mixtures formed during pipeline shipment) and tanker clean-outs. Some of them re distill the material, but just as many do not. Some burn it in industrial furnaces re-fitted to safely handle flamable liquids (my company does this).

There is probably no good reason not to blend it off with new gas after typical fuel filter polishing. There were a number of folks at my last marina that were always bringing me separated gas and wet gas. A little filtration (water separation followed by a carboy with an automotive gas filter on a hose on the bottom) additive, and blending made it into free stuff for me. I did that for about 5 years and never opened a carb. What you did not tell us was what made you decide that it was too old.

I had some gasoline mixed 50:1. It turned yellow so I took it to the recycling center. Could I have safely used it? It was several years old.

old gas continued

When I bought my 8 hp long shaft 4 cycle outboard 2 years ago, the dealer told me old gas is a no no 30 days than dump it in your car gas tank. Ive been doing this and have had no problems. I don`t motor much and Im talking about what`s left in a 3 gallon tank. Im not sure how old the gas might be before it becomes not usable in a car.
