Need a New Main Sail

I own a 1978 Hunter 27 and need a new main sail. I am seeking advice on material, where to buy, and estimated cost. I am new to sailing and sail in Penobscot Bay. I do not race or go off shore. I appreciate your suggestions.

How do you know you need a new mainsail? Maybe you could take it to a local sailmaker for an evaluation. Many times they can do a "nip & tuck" and small repair and make the sail like new so you could get a few more years out of it. Just a thought.

The sail is at a local sailmaker for repair, when he asked how old it was I told it came with the boat when new so about 36 years old, when I winced I started thinking about a replacement. But maybe he can patch the tear and we can sail with it for another year or two. If not I'll have a backup plan.
