Replacing fixed port windows

I have cracked windows on the port above the stove, its a long window. How are these windows removed? They look like they are glued in place, as I don't see any hardware involved. I am a long way from my boat, but thought I would start the groundwork on this.

What is the best process for removing & replacing these fixed port windows, such as the ones above the stove and in the head. Is there a source for the windows or do I need to get them made locally?

Thanks

By the way, we did a 25 minute video on You Tube for our Maiden sail in the Sea of Cortez, includes some of the driving to Mexico as well as Dolphins in Bahia Concepcion on the Baja side.....

Just thought I would share.

They are stuck in place with dow 5?? adhesive. Same stuff auto windshields use. to remove you need to cut the dow and then scrap (till blue in the face) the residue of the boat side recess.

More Windows - NOT Microsoft :)

For the past year or so I've become somewhat of a curmudgeon. Many folks will say I started out that way. :)

Anyway, I take some umbrage at folks calling portlights windows.

However, I finally have seen the light!

Since almost everyone nowadays calls them "windows", it occurred to me that if the OP used "windows" in the search feature, he'd/she'd get a LOT more "hits" in finding out how to rebed "windows."

This subject is sooooo recurring that it should work.

Whaddya think? :D:D:D

Steve, really, use the search engine, upper right tab. It's really quite good. This is a great website, and has a ton of information. Much of this kind of stuff, like electrical and water pumps, are not boat type or make specific. Same stuff for all of us.

Ok, I'm assuming these are the same types of plexi windows I had on my 40.5.
Really easy to remove.
Take out exterior screws if any are installed.
Then, go to a corner, and poke a very thin piece of stainless wire through. Something about 1/2 the diameter of a coat hanger.
You will be able to make a small hole through the inner to outer surfaces.
Then pass through a length of stainless wire which is used for seizing shackles, etc.
Have about 2 feet of wire on the inside, and outside of the window.
The next part takes 2 people.
Wrap the wire around a large wooden dowel, screwdriver handle, etc.
Now, you just use the wire as a saw, and carefully work your way around the perimeter. Should be out in 10 minutes.

Stu Jackson I see you sail a Catalina. Nice boats! This is the Hunter section of the forum where people can discus a particular boat and the things they have questions on. You are correct there are many things in the Shared forum that can be useful. However there is really no need for you to stop by and chastise people that do not do things as you see fit. I have gotten a lot of very good information from this forum and hope to continue without correction from folks other the moderators. Have a nice day.

Excuse me. You may not be aware of this handy website feature:

Show posts from all forums, all sites

I use it all the time.

Many issues are not brand specific, like just about everything on a boat except the hull, deck and rigging. Things like electrical, plumbing, etc. I try to help across all forums.

Have a nice weekend.

Enjoy the windows. :)

I really appreciate everyone's response, Especially the idea about the SS wire to break the adhesive bead - pretty good suggestion, probably will use that one. Glad there are no hidden fasteners.

Maybe with the exception of Stu Jackson......

You don't know me, you don't know what I did before I asked the question. The way you responded was very condescending and uncalled for in this forum.

If I wanted generalized information, I would have asked my question or searched on general issues. However, I was looking for specific information from someone that actually replaced those specific windows (which I did get by the way). Actual experience on a specific subject beats the heck out of armchair quarterbacks and their suppositions. Because, contrary to your huge base of wisdom, they are not all the same as you so glibly suggest.

Your comments show you really had nothing useful to add regarding my specific question, so maybe next time you should keep them to yourself and let people that would like to respond with something useful respond.

God I hate know it all's. They are always so full of themselves.

The more I know, the more I know I don't know what I thought I knew......

As far as Windows, people immediately knew what I meant, which was my intention, maybe not the correct nautical terminology, but who the heck made you the word police? Geez, get a life.

We removed these fixed port lights (or whatever we should call them) on my friends 35 several years ago. We used high strength fishing line. I would think that weed eater square line would work best.

As outlines above you need two patient people to cut these out. Not a bad idea to have someone with a vacuum cleaner cleaning as you go.

The product to reseal them is usually DOW 795. It is found at industrial supply companies. Sika also makes a product for this purpose.
