hey, I'm picking up a 24' siedelman fixed keel from Forked River, NJ and headed to the Pamlico Sound this weekend. My buddy wants to take the Labrador current to Oregon Inlet. has anyone gone this way?

You aren't riding the Labrador unless you plan to make a stop in Ireland
Down the coast with an option to get out of the ocean-up the Delaware bay, down the C&D and into the InterCoastal Waterway. You need to do that at Hampton Roads, VA in any case because you DO NOT want to be shooting Oregon Inlet or Ocracoke Inlet in a new-to-you boat. Enter the Pamlico via the ditch and the Neuse R.. Suggest a careful chart study.

Remnants of the south setting Labrador Current .... counter current to the Gulf Stream can be found quite close to the NJ surf line. Usually what is found is 'break-away' wandering eddies from the GulfStream that can come in close to the surf.
The predominant current along close to land off of NJ is 'south-setting'; but not always. There is a 'dividing line' between N and S currents at Barnegat Inlet. South of Barnegat the predominant current is usually south setting; and vice versa.
If its colder water - probably from the remnants of the Labrador counter current. If its ~80°F its probably an eddy current from the GS ... and can go in either rotational direction.

Reports indicate that the water is still in the 60's along northern NJ beaches (north of Barnegat, anyway)

From the weather.gov website you can go to the PORTS portal and get a graphical water temp. map but that portal doesn't work for me about half the time. Guess I shouldn't have filled out that survey (They asked). But this is the URL:

On your way back we used to go through large areas of lobster traps. Presumably set in the colder water brought down by the Labrador current. These intermingling eddies of warm and cold water is said to be why the sword fishing off Montauk is (Was) so good.

We have been seeing a lot of strong westerlies in SE PA the past week. If they carry on out to NJ, and blow strongly off shore, then it blows the warm water out to sea, and allows deeper, cool water to "upwell" and create cold temps along the Jersey Shore.
I remember one year when my buddy and I were still kayak surfing a lot, we were wearing dry tops well into the summer while surfing, because the water just stayed cold due to the upwellings caused by strong off shores.
